VA to reimburse veterans for International Code Council examination fees

Veterans who take International Code Council Professional Certification examinations are now eligible for reimbursement of test fees. The benefit, available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under the Montgomery G. I. Bill, repays qualified veterans for the cost of International Code Council exams taken after January 2003.

Education benefits cover the cost of the exam, whether the recipient passes or fails. Applicants can request reimbursement for multiple certifications.

"During this time of tight government budgets, cuts in spending and pay freezes, this benefit helps veterans and recognizes them for serving their country," said ICC CEO James Lee Witt. "It can also reduce a building department's expenses and improve the quality of the work force."

The VA benefit recognizes the importance of certification in acquiring employment and advancement in one's profession. The VA initiated the program to help transition military personnel into civilian occupations by recognizing their skills and training. After a review of the ICC Professional Certification exams, the VA Virginia Office accepted the International Code Council as an approved organization nationwide.

ICC Professional Certification is a significant professional accomplishment, demonstrating a proficiency in a specific area of code enforcement. Some states and many local governments require ICC Professional Certification as a criterion for employment. ICC exams test a variety of construction-related topics for inspectors, examiners and other code officials, covering Accessibility, Energy, Electrical, Fire, Mechanical, Plumbing, Property Maintenance, Residential and Structural Masonry Inspections.

"Bottom line, this benefit gives back to those who served their country, said Witt. "It helps construction code officials who are veterans save money and it certifies those professionals who work everyday to ensure the highest level of building safety in their communities."

To obtain more information on educational benefits for veterans and to submit an application online, visit www.gibill.va.gov, or call 1-888-GIBILL (1-888-442-4551).

For a list of the 35 ICC Professional Certification exams currently covered and reimbursable under the G. I. Bill, visit www.gibill.va.gov/Education/LCweb/search.asp. Type in the keyword: International Code Council.

The International Code Council, a 50,000-member association dedicated to building safety, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. The majority of U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes choose building safety and fire prevention codes developed by the International Code Council.
