During a natural disaster, such as a hurricane, "If
codes do the job, they minimize the damage and people aren't
left homeless," said Henry L. Green, Vice President of
the International Code Council Board of Directors, and keynote
speaker at the District of Columbia's 2005 Energy Code Conference.
Green addressed the importance of building safety, as well
as improving energy efficiency, while speaking to members
of the District's construction industry. He emphasized the
importance of green building construction as a way to combat
the increasing cost of energy.
The audience included employees from the Department of Consumer
and Regulatory Affairs. Green thanked them for the work they
do, congratulated them on adopting the 2003 International
Codes and offered the International Code Council as a resource
for assistance. Green officially invited the Department to
join the International Code Council Major Jurisdictions Committee.
The DCRA is about to roll out a new customer service program
geared specifically toward home owners. The new program will
streamline the permit process and make it easier for do-it-yourselfers
to get the necessary information they need quickly and easily.
The International Code Council and the ICC Foundation are
helping DCRA to update the publication, "You Can Build
It," to be ready in time for the grand opening ceremony
of the DCRA Homeowner's Center in June.
