Code Council developing Residential Plans Examiners certification

The International Code Council Board for International Professional Standards (BIPS) approved development of a national certification for Residential Plans Examiners. The Residential Plans Examiner certification will be developed by a group of residential planning experts and will be available by late 2007.

"ICC is developing the new Residential Plans Examiners certification to ensure public safety and better serve its members and governmental jurisdictions," said ICC CEO Rick Weiland. "This new certification is especially important for Gulf Coast states that are continuing one of the nation's largest reconstruction efforts in U.S. history following the destruction left by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita."

To develop the certification, the International Code Council is creating an Examination Development Committees made up of recognized experts in the profession. Committee members must be actively working as residential plans examiners. Individuals who are interested in serving can fill out an application on-line, or call 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233), ext. 5287. Applications must be submitted by Dec. 31. For more information about the International Code Council's Certification Program click here.

"It is critical that code administrators get it right—assuring the public that design plans for new residential construction meet current codes and standards for safety and protection," said ICC Board Director and former BIPS Chairman Douglas Murdock. "Residential Plans Examiner certification demonstrates that an individual has the knowledge and skills to apply the International Residential Code in a practical and effective manner."

The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes choose the International Codes developed by the International Code Council. International Code Council certification is the nation's oldest and most respected professional credential for those who provide plans examination and inspection of construction.
