Code Council Selects Federal Alliance for Safe Homes to Operate Foundation

International Code Council CEO Rick Weiland today announced the selection of the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes–FLASH®, Inc., to operate its Foundation programs while the two organizations evaluate a potential strategic alliance and/or merger. The move aligns two nonprofits that share a similar mission to support strong, sustainable and disaster-resistant building practices.

“We believe that leveraging our existing partnership by aligning the Code Council’s broad base of 40,000 plus members with the nimble, award-winning education program expertise of FLASH is a formula for success,” said Weiland. “FLASH’s track record of raising national awareness of residential property protection and life safety information is unparalleled. We are confident that FLASH will make great things happen at the International Code Council Foundation (ICCF).”

According to FLASH CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson, “Joint work with the Code Council’s Foundation aligns us with one of the most significant professions in building safety—the code enforcement official. As we approach our 10-year anniversary next year, we cannot imagine a more promising way to expand our ability to reach citizens across the United States and beyond with the information they desire and need to protect their families and homes from disaster.”

Current ICCF programs include Project H.E.R.O. (Homes Eliminated of Restrictions and Obstacles), a volunteer-based program to help disabled American veterans by making their home’s accessible. The Foundation annually sponsors Building Safety Week to increase awareness of making homes and buildings safe places where people can live, work and play.

The ICCF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating the devastating effects of natural disasters and other building tragedies by promoting ideas, methods and technologies that encourage the construction of durable, sustainable buildings and homes. The ICCF is a subsidiary of the Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety and fire prevention. The Council develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states that adopt codes choose the International Codes developed by the International Code Council (www.iccsafe.org).

FLASH is an award-winning coalition of government agencies, professional associations, and private industry committed to strengthening homes, safeguarding families, and protecting economic well-being by promoting disaster preparedness. Based in Tallahassee, Florida, FLASH is the nation’s fastest-growing disaster preparedness education organization.
