Complying with the Fair Housing Act Accessibility Requirements

Fair Housing Act Accessibility

Gain a better understanding of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) accessibility requirements.

Providing a Safe Harbor. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recognizes certain codes and standards that comply with FHA accessibility requirements. These codes and standards are called 'safe harbor' documents. For example, the 2003 International Building Code is a 'safe harbor' document because it meets or exceeds the requirements in the FHAG. If a building complies with the 2003 IBC, it complies with the FHAG. Click here to learn more about how the IBC works with the FHA. Read the press releases from ICC and NSA by clicking here.

The workshops are sponsored by HUD's Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity (HUD FHEO). HUD FHEO awarded a grant to the International Code Council and the United Spinal Association to provide education, outreach and assistance on the FHA requirements.

State and Local Governments can take Action. States are required to comply with the FHA. However, not all states are currently meeting the accessibility provisions. Legislative materials have been developed to assist state and local government officials and their staff in understanding the importance of adopting one of the safe harbor codes.
