Public Safety
Public Relations for Building and Fire
Officials
The purpose of this resource is to help you build positive
public and media relations. The information below will assist
you in promoting your building or fire department as a professional
public service dedicated to safety in your jurisdiction.
Below you will find fill-in-the-blank news releases that
you can send to local newspapers and radio and television
stations. Simply download the Word documents, fill in the
blanks and copy the news releases on your jurisdiction's letter
head. Feel free to customize the suggested quotes and subject
matter to meet your needs, especially if your jurisdiction
has local amendments to the codes. If you do not know the
names of editors or reporters who might use the news release,
address them to News Editor at newspapers, News Director at
radio stations and Assignment Editor at television stations.
While some media will publish or broadcast your news release
as is, others may contact you for an interview. To help you
"survive" a media interview, you can download the
handout, "Building a Media Relationship." This publication
offers background information about working with the media,
tips on how to prepare for interviews and how to survive a
media crisis.
ICC intends to provide you with additional news releases
and promotional materials in the future. We appreciate your
input. Let us know what subjects should be addressed. We'd
also like to know if this information is useful to you and
any successes you've had using it. Contact Jennifer
Gibson at 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233), ext. 4224.
