Overview
Provides the permit technician with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform their jobs in code administration: legal aspects, code language, code enforcement, reading construction documents, reviewing submitted documents and the permitting and inspection process. Participants will become familiarized with the International Building Code and the International Residential Code and sharpen customer relations skills.
This course is intended to help you become the best permit technician you can be.

Attend this ICC institute and earn ICC CEUs, AIA Learning Units (LUs) and Health Safety and Welfare credit (HSW)*
While this ICC Institute does not specifically prepare individuals for an ICC certification examination, it does serve as an excellent opportunity to earn CEUs towards renewing any ICC Certification or preparation for career advancement.

Cancellation Policy
All cancellation requests must be received in writing in
order to receive a refund. Refunds are subject to a processing
fee. There will be NO REFUNDS for cancellations received one
calendar week prior to the scheduled symposium.
If you must cancel, International Code Council must be notified 14 or more calendar days prior to the scheduled seminar date in order for you to receive a full refund. Cancellations made fewer than 14 days prior to seminar date are subject to a $25 cancellation fee. International Code Council reserves the right to cancel any seminar having insufficient registrations. If that occurs, all prepaid fees will be refunded in full. International Code Council cannot be responsible for any losses resulting from the cancellation of a seminar.

Follow-up
The First Permit Technician Institute
Permit Technicians from around the country gathered in Overland
Park Kansas to attend the first Permit Technician Institute
on March 27-29. The three day institute was co-hosted by ICC
and Kansas City Metro Association of Permit Technicians (KCMAPT);
it presented topics to help Permit Technicians increase their
knowledge and skills as well as to provide networking opportunities.

The training included many activities designed for participants
to interact with each other and learn about their common challenges
including an overview of building code enforcement, legal
principles in the building department, the fundamental plan
review process, reading basic construction documents, using
the I-Codes to find the answers to frequently asked questions
and strategies and techniques to effectively interact with
customers. During several evening activities hosted by KCMAPT,
participants had opportunities to share their knowledge and
best practices. The ICC bookstore was onsite and available
as a resource for those participants looking for more reference
books and the I-Codes.
The institute offered value to participants beyond learning
about the I-Codes. During closing activities, participants
were handed the microphone to describe what they gained from
the experience. The following is a sampling of the comments
from that discussion: "I am leaving this training with
knowledge, but more importantly confidence," "I
enjoyed learning how to read plans that we process,"
"It was a refresher of my knowledge," "I may
be called a 'Clerk' but now I know I am a Permit Technician,"
"I know I am not alone," "I learned how to
be more confident and more professional."
The Institute featured Steve Burger, Director of Code Compliance
Services at Bureau Veritas North America, Inc. and Susan McLaughlin,
Supervisor of Training with the New Jersey Department of Community
Affairs and ICC Education Committee member. The course was
written by Susan McLaughlin and Eirene Oliphant, Building
Official with Leawood KS and ICC Education Committee member.
