Academic and Degree Programs: Red Rocks Community College
ICC
and Red Rocks (Lakewood, Colorado) Community College announce
a partnership to provide a Certificate Program and Associate
of Applied Science Degree in Building Code Enforcement. The
on-line programs for professional code enforcement officials
allow students to earn a degree or certificate anytime, anywhere
there is access to a computer and the Internet.
To meet the needs of the code enforcement
audience, the programs are open to students with or without
prior college experience or credit. For individuals with previous
college credit, Red Rocks CC will determine which previously
earned credits from accredited institutions apply toward the
code enforcement certificate or degree. A minimum of 15 credits
must be taken at Red Rocks CC to earn a certificate or degree.
Students are responsible for submitting transcripts of credits
from other institutions.
The certificate program and degree programs provide a foundation
in building code knowledge along with practical supervisory,
management and communications skills. Students enrolling in
the programs earn professional credentials, prepare for career
advancement, network with colleagues and code enforcement
experts, and do not have to commute to classes. The classes
come to the student. Faculty from Red Rocks CC who are nationally
recognized leaders in the field of building code enforcement
teach the courses.
For students who might be apprehensive about going back to
school or taking on-line classes, Red Rocks offers a wide
range of services to support adult students, reduce anxiety
and increase success in the on-line classroom. Support services
include on-line applications to Red Rocks CC; Internet registration
for classes; on-line, telephone and e-mail access to faculty
and advisors; on-line and telephone technical support; on-line
submission of course work; library reference and research
assistance via the Internet; textbook ordering by phone, fax
or Internet; and home delivery of textbooks and resource materials.
Courses in the certificate and degree programs include Basic
Code Enforcement, Overview of the International Codes, Residential
and Non Residential Plan Review, Principles of Emergency Management,
Leadership and Influence, Decision Making and Problem Solving,
Introduction to Geographical Information Systems, Developing
Volunteer Resources, Effective Communications, Public Information
Officer and Interpersonal Communications.
The certificate program requires a minimum of 30 semester
hours. The AAS degree requires 60 credit hours distributed among code
specific courses, general education classes and elective courses.
The on-line courses include Internet transmission of lecture
materials, course content and reading lists; and student-to-student
and student-to-instructor interaction via threaded discussion,
e-mail and chat rooms. Some courses may require CD-ROM based
materials, videotapes or printed support materials.
Financial aid options include employer tuition assistance,
federal direct subsidized and unsubsidized loans, and private
loans. Students also may qualify for the hope tax credit or
lifetime learning tax credit. For financial aid information,
