Description

Participants will be better able to understand and apply the concept of mixed occupancies in buildings and compliance with code requirements in the 2006 IBC. Provides processes for determining code requirements for the nonseparated occupancies option and separated occupancies option.

Objectives

Upon completing this seminar, participants will be able to:

  • Define the concept of mixed occupancies.
  • Identify the three methods that are available for regulating mixed-occupancy buildings.
  • Follow an eight-step process for applying the accessory occupancies provisions.
  • Follow a four-step process for applying the nonseparated occupancies provisions.
  • Follow a five-step process for applying the separated occupancies provisions.
  • Apply the mixed-occupancy methods to a multi-story building.
  • Evaluate the differences between the three methods, including the relative advantages and disadvantages for each method.
  • Define an incidental use area and apply the appropriate provisions.

Instructor

Robert J. Schutz, P.E., P.S., CBO
Robert J. Schutz, P.E., P.S., CBO is currently an ICC Senior Technical Staff member in the Product Development department responsible for the innovation, coordination and assembling of new products including textbooks, training aids and reference materials.  Bob has just returned to ICC after service as an Assistant Architect Administrator at the Ohio Board of Building Standards.  While with the State of Ohio, he had oversight of the new Residential Code of Ohio program, including certification of local residential code departments and personnel. Previously, Bob served ICC as Manager of Instructors with responsibilities for the selection, oversight and quality of ICC's cadre of staff and contract instructors. His varied previous experiences include active military service during the 1980's as an Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) officer; building code enforcement for several central Ohio jurisdictions, including ten years as Chief Building Official (CBO) for the City of Powell where he also served as City Engineer and Director of Public Services; and Chief Engineer,for the Ohio Department of Health where he chaired the state's plumbing advisory board, was chief of plumbing and was a voting member on the Ohio Board Buildinbg Standards. He is experienced in combat construction, facilities engineering and project management as well as having been a plumber, sheet metal worker and brick mason.

Mr. Schutz has a civil engineering degree from Ohio Northern University with post-graduate studies at the University of Southern California and The Ohio State University in environmental law, land-use planning and public administration. He is a registered Professional Engineer and Professional Surveyor, certified Chief Building Official and holds Ohio certifications as Building Official, Plans Examiner, and Inspector for Building, Plumbing, Electrical Safety and Residential. Bob instructs IBC structural and nonstructural seminars, all IRC subjects, mechanical, plumbing and fuel gas codes and administrative topics.
