ICC, SEAOC Release Structural/Seismic Design Manuals

9011S121The International Code Council (ICC) has partnered with the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) to publish a series of Structural/Seismic Design Manuals updated to the 2012 International Building Code (IBC) and referenced standards. The manuals provide a step-by-step approach to applying structural provisions and include practical examples covering major systems such wood, masonry, concrete, and steel.
“The Structural/Seismic Design Manuals will help the practicing engineer to quickly understand the design provisions of the 2012 IBC and the corresponding material sections,” said Jim Amundson, S.E., President of SEAOC. “With a variety of real world examples contained in each volume, the manuals will assist engineers in effectively applying the requirements of the 2012 IBC to their projects.”
Now expanded to five volumes, the series includes:

  • Volume 1: Code Application Examples
  • Volume 2: Examples for Light-Frame, Tilt-Up, and Masonry Buildings
  • Volume 3: Examples for Concrete Buildings
  • Volume 4: Examples for Steel-Framed Buildings
  • Volume 5: Examples for Seismically Isolated Buildings and Buildings with   Supplemental Damping

“The new five-volume set represents an ambitious expansion in scope,” said Rafael Sabelli, S.E., Director of Seismic Design at Walter P Moore and SEAOC Project Manager of the series. “The manuals will provide designers extremely valuable guidance and commentary on practical design issues and how they relate to seismic performance for a wide range of systems and materials, including aspects of design often not included in design examples: diaphragms, base anchorage, and foundations.”

The SEAOC Structural/Seismic Design Manuals use the latest standards and the recommendations of the Structural Engineers Association of California. Examples range from the correct application of ASCE 7 requirements to design using isolation and damping technologies. The series offers top-to-bottom sets of examples, including diaphragms and base plates.

“The manuals provide practical knowledge engineers can apply to their projects every day,” said Mark Johnson, ICC Executive Vice President and Director of Business Development. “Combining ICC’s code background and SEAOC’s structural expertise has resulted in a powerful set of manuals.”

Each volume is an excellent reference and study guide for the NCEES Structural Exam. The manuals are invaluable resources for civil and structural engineers, architects, academics, and students. The manuals are available in a four- or five-part collection or each volume can be purchase individually in hard copy or PDF download directly from ICC. An Early Bird discount is available through September 30.

The International Code Council is a member-focused association. It is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures.  Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.
