Take action today on untested smoke alarms
The International Code Council joins the 24 organizations, institutions and leaders in fire service of the Vision 20/20 Project in a public service announcement and call-to-action on an important fire and life safety issue – smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.
Smoke and CO alarms are critical safety devices built to ensure the health, safety and wellness of building occupants. Recommendations by leading fire organizations encourage consumers to purchase only products that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. However, research conducted by Vision 20/20 found that several smoke and CO alarms being sold on e-commerce sites have not been tested by Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTLs). These untested alarms lack the certification to perform as required by industry standards.
The Code Council, Vision 20/20 and fire service leaders across the country encourage you to take action on this important issue today. Help us call upon e-commerce companies to stop the sale of unlisted smoke and carbon monoxide alarms immediately.
