New ICC, SES Resources Provide Guidance for the Effective Creation and Implementation of Standards

March 1st, 2016
by International Code Council
  • Press Releases

The International Code Council (ICC) is collaborating with SES—The Society for Standards Professionals in the distribution of two key resources designed to assist Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) and others who utilize or are involved in the standards development process. These two publications, ANSI/SES-1:2013, Recommended Practice for Designation and Organization of Standards and SES-2:2012, Model Procedure for the Development of Standards provide guidance for those interested in the effective creation and implementation of standards.

The Code Council is making these standards available to its members, industry and other standard practitioners in both print and digital formats.

“These new resources provide guidance for standard developers and others involved in defining the standards for safety, innovation and resilience in the built environment,” said ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “Through continued improvement in the development of standards that protect the public’s welfare and safety, we want to improve speed to market and encourage economic growth through better coordination between industry, design and compliance professionals.”

The two publications currently available are:

ANSI/SES-1:2013, Recommended Practice for Designation and Organization of Standards
This ANSI recognized SES document provides guidance on designating and organizing standards. With this document, standard committees, professional societies, trade associations, government agencies, companies, and others involved in the development and use of standards can more easily identify and appropriately include relevant information essential for effective and easy to implement standards.

Standardization for the organization of the material covered is critical for SDOs so that users can quickly know where to locate important sections of a standard such as the scope, definitions, relevant references, performance requirements, related testing procedures and other requirements.

SES-2:2012, Model Procedure for the Development of Standards
This SES standard provides a model development procedure that will assist those interested in using a reliable and robust ready-made model process. Rather than reinventing a complicated process, this document provides an SDO with simple ways to address some of the typical development issues that may be encountered such as openness, balance of interests, fairness, quorum, voting, consensus, views and objections, appeals and intellectual property.

Both publications are available through the Code Council at www.iccsafe.org/SES or by calling 1-888-ICC-SAFE (422-7233).

About the International Code Council

The International Code Council is a member-focused association. It is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.

About SES

SES – The Society for Standards Professionals was founded in 1947 as the Standards Engineering Society, a not-for-profit professional membership society dedicated to furthering the knowledge and use of standards and standardization. SES is unique in that it is the only organization in North America committed exclusively to this effort. SES provides a neutral networking forum where standards users and developers can come together to address mutual issues, opportunities, and interests in ways that work to the benefit of everyone involved with, or affected by, standards. The Society’s worldwide membership includes standards developers, users, managers, and information specialists from industry, government, standards developing organizations, trade associations, and academia. SES is the member body for the United States and Canada in the International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN) and accredited by the American National Standards Institute.
