Hi -

To answer whether PA will accept the exam: none of our exam score reports have a code year listed, so you'd simply be a "Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector" - non-specific of year.

If you must provide the content of what you tested on, which is a remote possibility, it would be up to the specific jurisdiction to decide whether or not they'd accept test results based on a newer code. We always suggest to check with the jurisdiction in which you wish to work, just to be safe.

Please reach out to me if you have any further questions - mporter@iccsafe.org or 888-422-7233 ext 5247.

Thanks -

I am planning to take the Structural Steel and Bolting Special Inspector (S1) and I have two options.

1. Exam based on 2012 International Codes
2. Exam based on 2015 International Codes

My projects are mostly in PA which still follows IBC 2009.

If I take either of the above exams will I be eligible to inspect jobs in PA since I am taking a test based on the latest Code (2015, for example)?

Thank you

This is what you really need for the exam...

Chapter 17, read it all, know 1701,1702,1703,1704 Very well.

Chapter 22 read it

Model Program for Special inspection section I, II and appendix D bolting part, know all of it Very well

AISC. Know how to read the table and how to find or calculate tolerances from table 1-1 to 1-29, best way to find info is to look at the table content.

AISC. Part 14. Read it well, I got 2-3 questions from here and 1 from table at 14-2. So know what table is for what.

Specification for Structural steel buildings (16.1):

  1. Section A3            Know it well
  2. Section J3, 1-5 and tables Know it well
  3. Chapter M                         Know it well
  4. Chapter N Be familiar of what it says

Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts (16.2):

Almost 50% of the exam comes from this section. I would say if u can memorize it, go for it. Know all the tables Very well and how to use it or calculate from it.

Ignore section 5 and Appendices A & B

Code Standard Practice for Steel Buildings & Bridges (16.3)

Go through it and read it, and know how to finds topics quickly though the table of content.

Section 17 (special inspections) and 22 (steel).  Make sure you know the layout and info within the chapters, but the first poster is correct, you won't likely reference it for the test.

The IBC will just reference the AISC/RCSC, you won't need it during the test.
