Am designing an exterior stair and elevator, structurally separated from existing three-story structure.
1027.3 Open side. Exterior exit stairways and ramps....shall be open on not less than one side.
1027.5 Location. Exterior stairways and ramps shall have a minimum FSD or 10-feet...from 1. Adjacent lot lines; 2. Other portions of buildings; 3. Other buildings on same lot...etc etc....unless walls and openings are protected in accordance with Section 705 based on FSD.
Ok, no worries so far.
1027.6 Exterior exit stairway and ramp protection. Exterior exit stairways and ramps shall be separated from the interior of buildings as required in section 1023.2.
All of this seems to be contradicting itself. To be sure, I'm not seeing this in the same light as the author, so please clarify.
Does the exterior stair have to be 10-ft from items 1-3; and enclosed & protected? Or open and protected?
