Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

The International Code Council has established a new Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The goal of this committee is to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in the membership association; and help our members diversify their own organizations and, ultimately, the building safety profession overall.

The Code Council has been in the forefront of the industry welcoming the next generation of leaders through its signature initiative, Safety 2.0. This ad hoc committee will help the Code Council determine next steps in bringing in new individuals to the association and the building safety industry to fill the workforce gap and create a more inclusive community of all backgrounds.

Scope

The Code Council Board of Directors approved the following guiding statement in December 2021:

At the Code Council, we understand that cultivating a diverse and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change. We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, physical ability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, language, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing inclusion in all activities of the Code Council.

Goals

In alignment with the guiding statement, the Ad Hoc Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will:

  • Research best practices in the association, business and government arenas.
  • Collect information from current and potential members to inform the committee’s recommendations.
  • Provide a list of recommendations for the Code Council Board of Directors to consider. These might cover, but are not limited to, programming and training suggestions; how to improve marketing, communications and outreach to reach new audiences; changes to the membership model or offerings; new organizational partnerships; or how to recognize individuals or departments who embrace and embody the inclusivity goals.

Participation Details

  • All meetings will be conducted via teleconference.
  • Participation will be voluntary and unpaid.
  • Applicants from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including code officials, architects, engineers and contractors.
  • Applicants do not need to be current Code Council members.
