Hazard mitigation is a sustained action that reduces long-term risk to human life and property. In fact, every $1 that the federal government invests in mitigation saves taxpayers an average of $6 in future spending. Using up-to-date building codes is a cornerstone of hazard mitigation, generating $11 in mitigation benefits for every $1 invested, and an effective way to help build resilience to disasters. From community capability- and capacity-building initiatives to ensuring equity, diversity, and inclusion in community risk reduction efforts, hear from public and private sector senior leaders how they are leveraging building codes to help shape the future of hazard mitigation.
