SUMMARY:Detailing for Increased Breakout Capacity of Steel Anchor Rods in Concrete Podium Slabs
DESCRIPTION:Multi-story light-frame structures are often built atop concrete podiums\, and in areas of high seismicity the overturning restraint system used to secure shear walls in these buildings can produce very high tension demands on the concrete anchorage components of these systems. While the loads can be high\, podium slabs tend to be fairly shallow (14” or less)\, and the design resistance calculated according to code provisions often isn’t enough. While anchor reinforcement detailing is address in ACI318\, the form it would need to take in slab situations is not addressed. Recognizing this\, a small group of practicing engineers\, funded by a SEAONC Special Projects Initiative and supported by Simpson Strong-Tie\, began an ambitions investigation into how to provide detailing (anchor reinforcing) that increases the breakout resistance of concrete anchors in podium slabs. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PT

SUMMARY:New Seismic Design Provisions for One-Story Structures with Flexible Diaphragms and Rigid Vertical Elements
DESCRIPTION:It has long been recognized that the seismic response of one-story tilt-up concrete wall buildings (and similar buildings with flexible diaphragms and rigid vertical elements) is controlled by the flexible diaphragm much more than the rigid vertical elements. Widely used seismic design provisions have not recognized or incorporated this behavior\, however. Now\, new seismic design provisions recently developed for ASCE 7-22 explicitly recognize this response behavior\, drawing from extensive numerical studies published in the guideline document Seismic Design of Rigid Wall-Flexible Diaphragm Buildings: An Alternate Procedure (FEMA P-1026) and supplemental studies of bare steel deck diaphragms. In fact\, the new design provisions go a step further to introduce a zone of reduced shear demand that improves seismic performance by allowing distributed yielding away from the diaphragm perimeter. This webinar will first present the concepts behind the new seismic design provisions\, and the numerical studies addressed in FEMA P-1026 and supplemental bare steel deck diaphragm studies. A design example will then be presented\, along with design and detailing tips and recommendations for practicing engineers. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PT

SUMMARY:2021 IBC Means of Egress (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class addresses numerous provisions in the 2021 International Building Code® (IBC®) where the code contains requirements pertaining to establishing a means of egress in buildings. The course is intended to help plan reviewer or building code officials responsible for plan review identify those areas where plan review will include compliance with the IBC. During this training\, participants will listen to lecture and view examples\, as well as discuss sections of the IBC that pertain to means of egress. They will participate in activities that involve a set of plans. \nParticipants will receive an overview of the fundamental requirements for means of egress as indicated in the 2021 International Building Code® (IBC®). They will be presented with specific problems related to means of egress and will be asked to solve each problem using a set of plans for a four story commercial building.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Designing to Minimize Restraint to Shortening Cracks in Post-Tensioned Structures
DESCRIPTION:Two of the main financial benefits of post-tensioning is the reduction in slab thickness and rebar compared to non-prestressed slabs. The downside side of this reduction is post-tensioned structures can be more susceptible cracking\, especially if their inherent movement is prevented or restrained. The webinar will cover the structural layout and details that are primarily used in the post-tensioned structures to minimize restraint to shortening (RTS) cracks. Typical post-tensioning slip details will be explained in conjunction with construction photographs to highlight good and poor construction practices.

SUMMARY:Energy in Existing Buildings: Significant Changes to Chapter 5 of the International Energy Conservation Code for Residential and Commercial Projects (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:Advancement in energy efficiency through energy codes has typically focused on the construction of new buildings. While there are continued advancements in energy efficiency for new construction within the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)\, code development committees placed a greater focus on existing buildings than in previous code editions. This course covers the updated energy efficiency requirements of the 2024 IECC for existing residential and commercial buildings\, with a focus on the additional energy efficiency provisions.

SUMMARY:Webinar - TMS 402-2022 Masonry Code: Changes and How They Can Help You Today
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Richard Bennett\, Ph.D.\, P.E. \nThe masonry design standards\, TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures were updated in 2022 following a 6-year revision cycle. Learn the major changes in these standards which include a complete rewriting of the veneer provisions\, the introduction of compression-controlled sections in strength design\, anchor bolt recalibration to be based on the ultimate strength of steel\, and the addition of an appendix on masonry reinforced with GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars. These changes and many more will be discussed\, and the impact of the changes on typical designs will be reviewed.

SUMMARY:Webinar - What Can Structural Engineers Do to Address the Problem of Floor Vibrations?
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Andrew W. Taylor\, Ph.D.\, S.E.\, FACI \nFloor vibrations are becoming an increasingly important design challenge as more buildings are constructed (or remodeled) to contain vibration-sensitive occupancies. Some examples are fitness gyms\, dance floors\, biotech research facilities\, micro- and nano-scale manufacturing facilities\, medical occupancies (such as MRI\, CAT scan\, and micro-surgery suites)\, and data centers. In addition\, building owners and tenants have developed a heightened awareness of\, and lower tolerance for\, floor vibrations that can be felt by humans. Thus\, as structural engineers\, we are now frequently called upon to design\, or renovate\, buildings to meet specific floor vibration criteria. This presentation provides an overview of what is common practice for limiting floor vibrations.\nThe following topics will be addressed during the web seminar:\n1) Code Requirements: Does 2015 IBC Section 1604.3 help with floor vibrations?\n2) Who uses ASCE 7-10 Appendix C (Serviceability Considerations)?\n3) Structural vibration criteria\n4) Equipment and methods used to make field measurements of structural vibrations\, particularly floor vibrations\n5) General approaches for vibration design (or evaluation) of floor systems\, including practical limitations of some existing analytical methods

SUMMARY:Inspector Skills (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class addresses the necessary soft skills for success as an inspector—those non-technical traits and behaviors that enhance an inspector’s ability to interact with others and to successfully carry out their job duties. These include people skills such as effective communication\, diplomacy and customer service\, but also include skills for problem solving\, professionalism\, integrity\, and time management. In addition to a solid understanding of the technical provisions of the codes\, developing appropriate soft skills are essential in pursuing the goal of safe\, healthy and durable buildings for the community. Developed specifically for construction inspectors in all disciplines\, the topics covered are equally important to all employees of public service agencies including permit technicians\, plan reviewers\, managers\, building officials and fire code officials. The information is also beneficial for developing policies and procedures to promote consistent and fair inspection practices while improving communications and public relations.
