SUMMARY:Wind Loads on Open Projecting Attached Porches
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore application of uplift and shear loads on gable-\, hip- and shed-type porches for main wind-force resisting system (MWFRS) wind loads parallel and perpendicular to a building face. It will also include assessment of component and cladding (C&C) uplift loads for rafters\, sheathing and sheathing attachment. Inset or partially inset porches are not evaluated nor are roof lines extending as an overhang over the porch. ASCE 7-16 wind load provisions will be evaluated including selection of applicable pressure coefficients. Prescriptive solutions for uplift and lateral loads will be presented. A draft document outlining this methodology and assumptions is being developed and peer review is welcome.

SUMMARY:Balcony Sprinklers in the Codes versus NFPA 13\, NFPA 13R\, and NFPA 13D (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:Extending fire sprinkler systems to protect balconies of residential buildings can provide exposure protection\, tradeoffs\, and life safety. However\, not all codes\, such as the International Building Code and International Residential Code for residential buildings have the same requirements for balcony sprinklers. NFPA 13\, NFPA 13R\, and NFPA 13D differ on how balcony protection\, if required\, are applied to residential and other occupancy balconies. As more mixed-use buildings and mixed-sprinkler standards are being applied\, this seminar looks across the model codes and installation standards to provide clarity to the subject. This seminar is important for the fire sprinkler industry\, architectural community\, and for code officials with the short history of balcony sprinklers\, detailed discussion\, and updates in the 2021 model codes as well as the 2022 NFPA sprinkler standards. \nPrice: $49.00 \nMember Price: $39.00 \n12:00 p.m. CT

SUMMARY:New Seismic Design Provisions for One-Story Structures with Flexible Diaphragms and Rigid Vertical Elements
DESCRIPTION:It has long been recognized that the seismic response of one-story tilt-up concrete wall buildings (and similar buildings with flexible diaphragms and rigid vertical elements) is controlled by the flexible diaphragm much more than the rigid vertical elements. Widely used seismic design provisions have not recognized or incorporated this behavior\, however. Now\, new seismic design provisions recently developed for ASCE 7-22 explicitly recognize this response behavior\, drawing from extensive numerical studies published in the guideline document Seismic Design of Rigid Wall-Flexible Diaphragm Buildings: An Alternate Procedure (FEMA P-1026) and supplemental studies of bare steel deck diaphragms. In fact\, the new design provisions go a step further to introduce a zone of reduced shear demand that improves seismic performance by allowing distributed yielding away from the diaphragm perimeter. This webinar will first present the concepts behind the new seismic design provisions\, and the numerical studies addressed in FEMA P-1026 and supplemental bare steel deck diaphragm studies. A design example will then be presented\, along with design and detailing tips and recommendations for practicing engineers.

SUMMARY:2022 Changes to AISC 341 and 360
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 editions of AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 360-22) and the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 341-22) represent the latest in structural steel design and construction. This presentation will cover the latest updates\, including the exciting addition of concrete-filled coupled composite plate shear walls to both standards. Other major additions to the Specification include clarification on what to include in structural design documents; a new appendix on filled high-strength composite members; and a major expansion of the appendix on structural design for fire conditions. The Seismic Provisions now include an appendix on nonlinear response history analysis. These and many more developments will be discussed to orient users on how to start incorporating these latest standards into their practice. \nRegister here. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. PT

SUMMARY:Shear Friction Dowel Design for Concrete Diaphragms
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will focus on the misconception of the design of the slab to shear wall connection\, specifically how the joint rebar is required to transfer all the diaphragm force at the level in question and the shear from the upper floors. It will address the shear friction connection from the shear wall to the foundation. Most engineers we review do not add rebar at the construction joint and use the vertical wall rebar for shear transfer (by default) and flexural resistance\, which occur at the same time. They rarely perform the required design or acknowledge the two simultaneous forces. The webinar will also discuss that a “dowel” must cross the construction joint. Rebar in the slab\, that does not cross between the wall and slab does not provide shear friction. This is a common detailing mistake. \nRegister here. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. PT
