SUMMARY:Initial and Preliminary Damage Assessments (3.0 Hour) (Live In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:All too often after a disaster\, an affected community is left on its own to struggle with coordinating\, conducting and completing its Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDA). When PDAs are not conducted quickly and Emergency Managers are not able to obtain reliable PDA data\, a community’s ability to request and obtain local\, state and/or federal assistance is greatly impacted. Failing to perform PDAs timely and consistently will significantly impact a community’s ability to recover. This training session begins by reviewing the various phases of a disaster\, emergency management basics\, and the post-disaster roles and responsibilities typically assigned to building departments in the wake of disasters. This training then discusses the importance of performing Preliminary Damage Assessments (PDAs) in a timely and consistent manner. This training session discusses when and how to perform PDAs along with training and credentialing requirements. This training concludes by providing information related to operational environments and disaster related hazards.

SUMMARY:Inspector Skills (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class addresses the necessary soft skills for success as an inspector—those non-technical traits and behaviors that enhance an inspector’s ability to interact with others and to successfully carry out their job duties. These include people skills such as effective communication\, diplomacy and customer service\, but also include skills for problem solving\, professionalism\, integrity\, and time management. In addition to a solid understanding of the technical provisions of the codes\, developing appropriate soft skills are essential in pursuing the goal of safe\, healthy and durable buildings for the community. Developed specifically for construction inspectors in all disciplines\, the topics covered are equally important to all employees of public service agencies including permit technicians\, plan reviewers\, managers\, building officials and fire code officials. The information is also beneficial for developing policies and procedures to promote consistent and fair inspection practices while improving communications and public relations.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Principles and Procedures Behind ASCE 41
DESCRIPTION:The Standard for seismic retrofit and evaluation of existing buildings\, ASCE/SEI 41\, is required for the evaluation of all federal buildings as well as seismically vulnerable buildings targeted by some recently passed California ordinances. Although the Standard appears foreign to some design professionals used to the prescriptive force-based procedures developed for new building design\, ASCE 41 provides clarification for many questions a design professional is confronted with in evaluating existing non-ductile buildings. This presentation highlights important issues with existing building evaluation not appropriately addressed by new building code. It then steps through the principles of using the ASCE 41 procedures and provides context for the various analysis sections.

SUMMARY:Introduction to the 2023 ICC 500\, Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:This course introduces the 2023 edition of the ICC 500 Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm shelters which is referenced by the 2024 I-Codes. The 2023 ICC 500 provides minimum design and construction requirements for storm shelters that provide a safe refuge from storms producing high winds\, hurricanes\, and tornadoes. It contains design requirements for the main wind-resisting structural system and components and cladding. It also provides basic occupant life safety and health requirements including means of egress\, lighting\, sanitation\, ventilation\, fire safety\, and floor space. This course begins by providing an overview of the code provisions found within the 2024 IBC that establish when and where storm shelters are required. This course then goes on to provide an overview of the ICC 500 with discussions on some of its key provisions and requirements. Goals & Objectives: This course increases awareness on when and where storm shelters are required along with the requirements found within the ICC 500-23 regarding the minimum design and construction of storm shelters.
