SUMMARY:Understanding the Principles and Procedures Behind ASCE 41
DESCRIPTION:The Standard for seismic retrofit and evaluation of existing buildings\, ASCE/SEI 41\, is required for the evaluation of all federal buildings as well as seismically vulnerable buildings targeted by some recently passed California ordinances. Although the Standard appears foreign to some design professionals used to the prescriptive force-based procedures developed for new building design\, ASCE 41 provides clarification for many questions a design professional is confronted with in evaluating existing non-ductile buildings. This presentation highlights important issues with existing building evaluation not appropriately addressed by new building code. It then steps through the principles of using the ASCE 41 procedures and provides context for the various analysis sections.

DESCRIPTION:Part 2 in this webinar series presents the general modeling and analysis requirements for diaphragms given in ACI 318-19. Information is provided on determination of diaphragm rigidity and horizontal distribution of lateral forces to the vertical elements of the lateral force-resisting system (LFRS). Methods on how to determine the center of rigidity of a system and approximate in-plane stiffnesses walls and frames are also given. Equivalent beam models are covered in detail\, with in-depth information provided on how to determine in-plane forces in diaphragms and collectors. Included is a design method for collectors wider than the vertical elements of the LFRS.

DESCRIPTION:This course introduces the 2023 edition of the ICC 500 Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm shelters which is referenced by the 2024 I-Codes. The 2023 ICC 500 provides minimum design and construction requirements for storm shelters that provide a safe refuge from storms producing high winds\, hurricanes\, and tornadoes. It contains design requirements for the main wind-resisting structural system and components and cladding. It also provides basic occupant life safety and health requirements including means of egress\, lighting\, sanitation\, ventilation\, fire safety\, and floor space. This course begins by providing an overview of the code provisions found within the 2024 IBC that establish when and where storm shelters are required. This course then goes on to provide an overview of the ICC 500 with discussions on some of its key provisions and requirements. Goals & Objectives: This course increases awareness on when and where storm shelters are required along with the requirements found within the ICC 500-23 regarding the minimum design and construction of storm shelters.

DESCRIPTION:Mid-career residential inspectors and plans examiners will find this seminar insightful as will designers looking for a review of new requirements for fire-resistance between dwelling and townhome units\, addition of solar panels and energy storage systems. The requirements for two-family dwelling and townhome fire-resistance have changed in some unusual ways in the 2024 IRC. The provisions are reviewed\, and consequences of the changes are discussed. Topics included stacked and semi-stacked two-family dwellings\, imaginary lot lines and staggered placement of townhomes. As energy storage systems and solar panels are added to existing and new homes\, requirements for their placement and safe use are added to the code. New requirements for storage new the dwelling or garage are added as well as minimum distance between stacks of the ESS.
