SUMMARY:Introduction to the 2023 ICC 500\, Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:This course introduces the 2023 edition of the ICC 500 Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm shelters which is referenced by the 2024 I-Codes. The 2023 ICC 500 provides minimum design and construction requirements for storm shelters that provide a safe refuge from storms producing high winds\, hurricanes\, and tornadoes. It contains design requirements for the main wind-resisting structural system and components and cladding. It also provides basic occupant life safety and health requirements including means of egress\, lighting\, sanitation\, ventilation\, fire safety\, and floor space. This course begins by providing an overview of the code provisions found within the 2024 IBC that establish when and where storm shelters are required. This course then goes on to provide an overview of the ICC 500 with discussions on some of its key provisions and requirements. Goals & Objectives: This course increases awareness on when and where storm shelters are required along with the requirements found within the ICC 500-23 regarding the minimum design and construction of storm shelters.

SUMMARY:Fire-resistance\, Solar Panels and ESS (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:Mid-career residential inspectors and plans examiners will find this seminar insightful as will designers looking for a review of new requirements for fire-resistance between dwelling and townhome units\, addition of solar panels and energy storage systems. The requirements for two-family dwelling and townhome fire-resistance have changed in some unusual ways in the 2024 IRC. The provisions are reviewed\, and consequences of the changes are discussed. Topics included stacked and semi-stacked two-family dwellings\, imaginary lot lines and staggered placement of townhomes. As energy storage systems and solar panels are added to existing and new homes\, requirements for their placement and safe use are added to the code. New requirements for storage new the dwelling or garage are added as well as minimum distance between stacks of the ESS.

SUMMARY:Shear Friction Dowel Design for Concrete Diaphragms
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will focus on the misconception of the design of the slab to shear wall connection\, specifically how the joint rebar is required to transfer all the diaphragm force at the level in question and the shear from the upper floors. It will address the shear friction connection from the shear wall to the foundation. Most engineers we review do not add rebar at the construction joint and use the vertical wall rebar for shear transfer (by default) and flexural resistance\, which occur at the same time. They rarely perform the required design or acknowledge the two simultaneous forces. The webinar will also discuss that a “dowel” must cross the construction joint. Rebar in the slab\, that does not cross between the wall and slab does not provide shear friction. This is a common detailing mistake.

SUMMARY:Fire-Resistance and Sound Ratings for Wood-Frame Assemblies (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:Building height\, area\, occupancy class\, and number of stories will often determine the fire resistive construction requirements of building elements in light wood frame construction. This presentation introduces requirements for fire resistance and sound transmission in wood frame buildings of Types III and V construction. One of the methods for determining fire resistance in the International Building Code (IBC) is fire-resistant designs documented in approved sources. The American Wood Council Design for Code Acceptance No. 3 Fire-Resistance-Rated Wood-Frame Wall and Floor/Ceiling Assemblies (DCA3)\, is commonly used as an approved source to specify fire-resistance-rated wood-frame assemblies. The DCA3 can also be used to demonstrate compliance with sound transmission requirements.

SUMMARY:Shear Wall Design Methods – 2024 WFCM and 2021 SDPWS (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:Two AWC standards utilized throughout the nation for a code compliant design of wood shear walls are 2024 Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM) for One- and Two-Family Dwellings and 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS). The WFCM contains both a prescriptive and engineering design approach. While the prescriptive design method will readily yield solutions that tend to be more conservative\, the engineered design method will often yield more efficient design solutions. This seminar includes examples of seismic and wind shear wall designs for segmented and perforated shear walls\, utilizing the WFCM and the SDPWS along with a comparison of the results.
