SUMMARY:Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) in United States has had humble beginnings but has made huge strides over the past couple of decades. A majority of tall buildings in western United States are currently being designed using PBEE principles rather than prescriptive code procedures. Successful further development of PBEE requires close collaboration between researchers and practicing engineers. Currently PBEE is undergoing a very important transition from its first generation of methodologies to a new and fully probabilistic approach. For such a transition to be successful a number of research needs and practical requirements must be addressed in a timely and cooperative manner. These needs vary from meaningful definition of desired performance objectives\, consequences of not meeting these objectives\, dependable characterization of system and component level fragility specifications\, meaningful representation of earthquake ground motions\, improved understanding of the performance of structure and its contents\, soil-foundation-structure interaction\, and bridging the gap between and advancing both experimental research and our analytical capabilities. This presentation will briefly discuss these issues and provide examples of problems and solutions that the speaker has encountered in dealing with these needs. The provisions of the newly released LATBSDC Guidelines (scheduled for release on May 15\, 2020) will be also discussed. \nRegister here. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. PT

SUMMARY:What Can Structural Engineers Do to Address the Problem of Floor Vibrations?
DESCRIPTION:Floor vibrations are becoming an increasingly important design challenge as more buildings are constructed (or remodeled) to contain vibration-sensitive occupancies. Some examples are fitness gyms\, dance floors\, biotech research facilities\, micro- and nano-scale manufacturing facilities\, medical occupancies (such as MRI\, CAT scan\, and micro-surgery suites)\, and data centers. In addition\, building owners and tenants have developed a heightened awareness of\, and lower tolerance for\, floor vibrations that can be felt by humans. Thus\, as structural engineers\, we are now frequently called upon to design\, or renovate\, buildings to meet specific floor vibration criteria. This presentation provides an overview of what is common practice for limiting floor vibrations. The following topics will be addressed during the web seminar: \nCode Requirements: Does 2015 IBC Section 1604.3 help with floor vibrations?\nWho uses ASCE 7-10 Appendix C (Serviceability Considerations)?\nStructural vibration criteria\nEquipment and methods used to make field measurements of structural vibrations\, particularly floor vibrations\nGeneral approaches for vibration design (or evaluation) of floor systems\, including practical limitations of some existing analytical methods \nRegister here. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:Hydrogen Americas Summit
DESCRIPTION:Having established itself as the premier gathering for the global hydrogen community in the Americas region\, the Hydrogen Americas 2024 Summit & Exhibition will return to Washington D.C. on 11 – 12 June 2024. \nClean hydrogen has emerged as a crucially important tool to aid the decarbonization of hard to abate sectors in order to achieve energy security targets and net zero. As part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)\, the 45V clean hydrogen production tax credit provides projects with a key financial incentive through CCUS. \nFollowing the announcement of 45V alongside the 45Q tax credit\, seen by some to be more practical due to there being no restrictive emissions requirements with calculations based entirely on carbon capture\, questions remain over their applicability to certain projects based upon size and scale. \nWith a speaker line up packed with policy makers and key industry leaders from across the US and Americas\, the Hydrogen Americas Summit provides the platform for these questions to be discussed at the highest level and for developers to understand the impact of these policies\, making use of them in the most optimal way possible. \nWe have also extended our free-to-attend expo area to allow 4000 industry leaders from across the value chain to witness hydrogen in action\, to participate in the popular H2-Tech Series and to meet 100+ hydrogen pioneers who will be showcasing their latest technologies\, project developments and policies. Register your place today to connect with new business partners and exchange the latest insights to make your hydrogen project a reality.

SUMMARY:Understanding the Principles and Procedures Behind ASCE 41
DESCRIPTION:The Standard for seismic retrofit and evaluation of existing buildings\, ASCE/SEI 41\, is required for the evaluation of all federal buildings as well as seismically vulnerable buildings targeted by some recently passed California ordinances. Although the Standard appears foreign to some design professionals used to the prescriptive force-based procedures developed for new building design\, ASCE 41 provides clarification for many questions a design professional is confronted with in evaluating existing non-ductile buildings. This presentation highlights important issues with existing building evaluation not appropriately addressed by new building code. It then steps through the principles of using the ASCE 41 procedures and provides context for the various analysis sections. \n11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. PT \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:A Structural Engineer's Primer for Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) is the conceptual framework upon which ground motion intensity (i.e.\, spectral acceleration) is estimated for use in design throughout the United States. It is also used in site specific determination of ground motion for special projects or projects with poor site conditions. Determination of ground motion parameters is the realm of geotechnical engineers\, however\, structural engineers should have a working understanding of the underpinnings of PSHA to properly interpret both the design ground motion parameters and their structural analysis results. This seminar will provide a background in PSHA designed for structural engineers to develop an understanding of where critical design ground parameters are derived from. \n12:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. PT \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:PART 1 – Design and Detailing Reinforced Concrete Diaphragms
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 in this webinar series presents methods on how to determine the required thickness of a diaphragm based on serviceability and strength (in-plane and out-of-plane) requirements. Also presented are step-by-step procedures on how to determine in-plane diaphragm forces due to wind\, general structural integrity\, seismic\, soil\, transfer\, anchorage\, and connection forces based on the requirements of ASCE/SEI 7-22. Methods on how to determine collector design forces for buildings assigned to SDC C through F are also provided. \n11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PT \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:Elongation Record Review
DESCRIPTION:Several post-tension suppliers have provided examples of how engineers are incorrectly understanding using elongation records. The lack of understanding is creating delays at the job site\, increased potential for corrosion and underestimating the strand force. Webinar will discuss\, the stressing process\, measuring\, what do the measured elongations actually represent and the reason we have a 7% code tolerance. \nRegister here. \n11:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M.
