The session will describe the uses of mat foundations\, historical perspectives that have led to the current procedures\, and discuss soil properties and soil-structure interaction. Guidance will be provided for proportioning\, analysis\, and design for mat foundations. Code requirements and accepted approaches to their implementation will also be addressed\, with additional discussion on best practices that go beyond code minimum requirements. Finally\, detailing and constructability tips will be presented. The scope of this session will include design of mat foundations for both non-seismic and high-seismic conditions. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PT

SUMMARY:Detailing for Increased Breakout Capacity of Steel Anchor Rods in Concrete Podium Slabs
DESCRIPTION:Multi-story light-frame structures are often built atop concrete podiums\, and in areas of high seismicity the overturning restraint system used to secure shear walls in these buildings can produce very high tension demands on the concrete anchorage components of these systems. While the loads can be high\, podium slabs tend to be fairly shallow (14” or less)\, and the design resistance calculated according to code provisions often isn’t enough. While anchor reinforcement detailing is address in ACI318\, the form it would need to take in slab situations is not addressed. Recognizing this\, a small group of practicing engineers\, funded by a SEAONC Special Projects Initiative and supported by Simpson Strong-Tie\, began an ambitions investigation into how to provide detailing (anchor reinforcing) that increases the breakout resistance of concrete anchors in podium slabs. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PT

SUMMARY:New Seismic Design Provisions for One-Story Structures with Flexible Diaphragms and Rigid Vertical Elements
DESCRIPTION:It has long been recognized that the seismic response of one-story tilt-up concrete wall buildings (and similar buildings with flexible diaphragms and rigid vertical elements) is controlled by the flexible diaphragm much more than the rigid vertical elements. Widely used seismic design provisions have not recognized or incorporated this behavior\, however. Now\, new seismic design provisions recently developed for ASCE 7-22 explicitly recognize this response behavior\, drawing from extensive numerical studies published in the guideline document Seismic Design of Rigid Wall-Flexible Diaphragm Buildings: An Alternate Procedure (FEMA P-1026) and supplemental studies of bare steel deck diaphragms. In fact\, the new design provisions go a step further to introduce a zone of reduced shear demand that improves seismic performance by allowing distributed yielding away from the diaphragm perimeter. This webinar will first present the concepts behind the new seismic design provisions\, and the numerical studies addressed in FEMA P-1026 and supplemental bare steel deck diaphragm studies. A design example will then be presented\, along with design and detailing tips and recommendations for practicing engineers. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:00 PM PT

SUMMARY:Part 1 - Fundamentals of Retaining Wall Structural Design
DESCRIPTION:Part 1 will cover structural design fundamentals for a variety of retaining wall types. It will address fill walls\, such as cast-in-place concrete cantilevered walls and mechanically stabilized earth walls; and cut walls\, such as soldier pile walls and soil nail walls. It will address both IBC and AASHTO design methodologies\, and will cover the basics of wall seismic design. It will also present guidelines for selecting the optimal retaining wall type from the available systems. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:30 PM PT

SUMMARY:2025 International Building Safety Day
DESCRIPTION:International Building Safety Day\nWith the support of twenty eight international organisations\, the inaugural International Building Safety Day (IBSD) was launched on 22 May 2024. \nThe purpose of IBSD is to establish an annual day dedicated to promoting and celebrating building safety\, and the benefits it provides to the health and welfare of people worldwide. The day is set aside to focus on the critical issue of international building safety and serves as a poignant reminder to governments\, communities and all stakeholders within the built environment to uphold the importance of building safety. \nAt its core\, building safety involves avoiding the loss of life and injury to the occupants and users of buildings through events such as fire or structural failure. But it also involves the health and well-being of people through their daily experiences of the buildings in which they live\, work or visit. This may include internal air quality\, thermal comfort\, weather-proofing\, resilience to natural events and access. It can also involve the impacts buildings have on the broader environment or the financial and emotional costs incurred by consumers as a result of\nbuilding defects. \nWe all know that building safety is no accident. As buildings become increasingly complex\, the supply chains for products continue to expand internationally\, and the demands made of practitioners multiply\, the building control system itself needs to have the ability to respond to innovation in design\, the application of new technologies\, construction methodologies and products\, as well as emerging building policy considerations. \nThis year’s IBSD theme of ‘Building for the Future’ is intended to promote the changing nature of building in terms of modern methods of construction\, design and materials responding to environmental performance objectives or other related subjects relevant to the local context. Take the time to think about how this might apply to you in your work\, your experience of the built environment or those you engage with. \nIBSD also provides an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of those serving in roles that support the essential responsibilities of authorities having jurisdiction and the crucial role they play in ensuring building safety. These professionals\, and the technical standards and conformance infrastructure that sits behind them\, are not often in the spotlight\, working behind the scenes to ensure that people are safe to pursue their daily lives and activities – whether at home\, in the office\, in a hospital\, at a place of worship or school.

SUMMARY:Part 2 - Fundamentals of Retaining Wall Structural Design
DESCRIPTION:Part 2 will focus on cast-in-place concrete cantilevered wall design\, and will go into greater detail than Part 1. It will go through examples of design calculations\, step-by-step\, for both IBC and AASHTO methodologies. The examples will discuss the different assumptions and design criteria that can be used in retaining wall design\, and how those different assumptions and criteria can impact the final design. It will also address design elements such as fall protection\, vehicle barriers\, soil backfill specifications and wall drainage. \nRegister here. \n11:00 AM – 1:30 PM PT
