SUMMARY:Tall Mass Timber Building and the 2021 IBC (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 International Building Code allows for construction of tall mass timber buildings with larger heights and areas than previously permitted in Types III\, IV\, and V construction. This course will provide an overview of mass timber which includes any product currently permitted for use in Type IV (heavy timber) construction such as cross-laminated timber (CLT)\, structural composite lumber (SCL)\, glued laminated timber (glulam)\, mechanically laminated decking (aka nail-laminated timber\, NLT)\, and large section sawn timbers. Learn about provisions first introduced in the 2015 and 2018 IBC for mass timber construction as well as an overview of tall mass timber construction per the 2021 IBC and 2021 International Fire Code. Research and development conducted in support of new tall mass timber Construction Types IV-A\, IV-B and IV-C in the 2021 IBC will also be discussed. Topics include: heights and areas\, fire safety\, fire and connection design\, construction fire safety\, special inspection\, energy\, acoustics and lateral design provisions.

SUMMARY:Illegal cannabis = Dangerous buildings (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:In a one-of-a-kind program\, the Lancaster California Police Department paired an experienced building inspector with an ex-code enforcement officer turned investigator and assigned the duo to combat the deleterious effects of illegal indoor cannabis cultivation. In this training\, the two will present an introduction to the building damage and hazardous conditions associated with illicit indoor cannabis cultivation in single family dwellings. Participants will be taught how indoor environmental conditions\, growing techniques\, pesticide and fertilizer use impact the building. This presentation will also discuss the long-term effects of excessive moisture mold growth\, chemical contamination and fire hazards that arise from illegal indoor grows if not properly remediated. The presentation will also include some safety considerations for inspectors. This training is essential for protecting public safety\, maintaining the integrity of local building standards and preserving safe and healthy housing in areas impacted by illegal indoor cannabis cultivation.

SUMMARY:2021 IBC Means of Egress (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class addresses numerous provisions in the 2021 International Building Code® (IBC®) where the code contains requirements pertaining to establishing a means of egress in buildings. The course is intended to help plan reviewer or building code officials responsible for plan review identify those areas where plan review will include compliance with the IBC. During this training\, participants will listen to lecture and view examples\, as well as discuss sections of the IBC that pertain to means of egress. They will participate in activities that involve a set of plans. \nParticipants will receive an overview of the fundamental requirements for means of egress as indicated in the 2021 International Building Code® (IBC®). They will be presented with specific problems related to means of egress and will be asked to solve each problem using a set of plans for a four story commercial building.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Designing to Minimize Restraint to Shortening Cracks in Post-Tensioned Structures
DESCRIPTION:Two of the main financial benefits of post-tensioning is the reduction in slab thickness and rebar compared to non-prestressed slabs. The downside side of this reduction is post-tensioned structures can be more susceptible cracking\, especially if their inherent movement is prevented or restrained. The webinar will cover the structural layout and details that are primarily used in the post-tensioned structures to minimize restraint to shortening (RTS) cracks. Typical post-tensioning slip details will be explained in conjunction with construction photographs to highlight good and poor construction practices.

SUMMARY:Energy in Existing Buildings: Significant Changes to Chapter 5 of the International Energy Conservation Code for Residential and Commercial Projects (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:Advancement in energy efficiency through energy codes has typically focused on the construction of new buildings. While there are continued advancements in energy efficiency for new construction within the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)\, code development committees placed a greater focus on existing buildings than in previous code editions. This course covers the updated energy efficiency requirements of the 2024 IECC for existing residential and commercial buildings\, with a focus on the additional energy efficiency provisions.

SUMMARY:Webinar - TMS 402-2022 Masonry Code: Changes and How They Can Help You Today
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Richard Bennett\, Ph.D.\, P.E. \nThe masonry design standards\, TMS 402/602 Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures were updated in 2022 following a 6-year revision cycle. Learn the major changes in these standards which include a complete rewriting of the veneer provisions\, the introduction of compression-controlled sections in strength design\, anchor bolt recalibration to be based on the ultimate strength of steel\, and the addition of an appendix on masonry reinforced with GFRP (Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars. These changes and many more will be discussed\, and the impact of the changes on typical designs will be reviewed.

SUMMARY:Webinar - What Can Structural Engineers Do to Address the Problem of Floor Vibrations?
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Andrew W. Taylor\, Ph.D.\, S.E.\, FACI \nFloor vibrations are becoming an increasingly important design challenge as more buildings are constructed (or remodeled) to contain vibration-sensitive occupancies. Some examples are fitness gyms\, dance floors\, biotech research facilities\, micro- and nano-scale manufacturing facilities\, medical occupancies (such as MRI\, CAT scan\, and micro-surgery suites)\, and data centers. In addition\, building owners and tenants have developed a heightened awareness of\, and lower tolerance for\, floor vibrations that can be felt by humans. Thus\, as structural engineers\, we are now frequently called upon to design\, or renovate\, buildings to meet specific floor vibration criteria. This presentation provides an overview of what is common practice for limiting floor vibrations.\nThe following topics will be addressed during the web seminar:\n1) Code Requirements: Does 2015 IBC Section 1604.3 help with floor vibrations?\n2) Who uses ASCE 7-10 Appendix C (Serviceability Considerations)?\n3) Structural vibration criteria\n4) Equipment and methods used to make field measurements of structural vibrations\, particularly floor vibrations\n5) General approaches for vibration design (or evaluation) of floor systems\, including practical limitations of some existing analytical methods

SUMMARY:Use of Grade 80 and Grade 100 Reinforcing Bars in ACI 318-19
DESCRIPTION:Recent advances\, including substantial new research\, have enabled reinforcing steels of higher strengths to be a viable option in a variety of applications in reinforced concrete structures. This webinar presents information related to the use of Grade 80 and Grade 100 steel reinforcement in the 2019 edition of ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete. Numerous revisions have been made in ACI 318-19 to incorporate the use of high-strength reinforcement\, and this webinar covers new and updated requirements for the following: \n\nTypes of nonprestressed reinforcing bars\nDevelopment and splice lengths\nStructural members\, including two-way slabs\, beams\, columns\, walls\, diaphragms\, and foundations\nLimits on concrete compressive strength\nStrength reduction factors\n\nBenefits related to the use of Grade 80 and Grade 100 reinforcing bars are also included.
