SUMMARY:Webinar - What Can Structural Engineers Do to Address the Problem of Floor Vibrations?
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Andrew W. Taylor\, Ph.D.\, S.E.\, FACI \nFloor vibrations are becoming an increasingly important design challenge as more buildings are constructed (or remodeled) to contain vibration-sensitive occupancies. Some examples are fitness gyms\, dance floors\, biotech research facilities\, micro- and nano-scale manufacturing facilities\, medical occupancies (such as MRI\, CAT scan\, and micro-surgery suites)\, and data centers. In addition\, building owners and tenants have developed a heightened awareness of\, and lower tolerance for\, floor vibrations that can be felt by humans. Thus\, as structural engineers\, we are now frequently called upon to design\, or renovate\, buildings to meet specific floor vibration criteria. This presentation provides an overview of what is common practice for limiting floor vibrations.\nThe following topics will be addressed during the web seminar:\n1) Code Requirements: Does 2015 IBC Section 1604.3 help with floor vibrations?\n2) Who uses ASCE 7-10 Appendix C (Serviceability Considerations)?\n3) Structural vibration criteria\n4) Equipment and methods used to make field measurements of structural vibrations\, particularly floor vibrations\n5) General approaches for vibration design (or evaluation) of floor systems\, including practical limitations of some existing analytical methods

SUMMARY:Design of Post-Tensioned One-Way Slabs and Beams of Long Span Garages
DESCRIPTION:Long span garages are very common across the United States and are typically designed using relatively thin post-tensioned one-way slabs that are supported by post-tensioned beams and girders. The beams will often span in the 60-foot range and will typically require no camber due to proper use of post-tensioning. The webinar will highlight the design steps of post-tensioned one-way slabs and beams that are typical for long span garages while addressing the relevant code sections. Typical details that are associated with these types of structures will also be shown in conjunction with construction photographs.

SUMMARY:When Disaster Strikes - Evaluator Training (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:All too often before and after a disaster\, an affected community is left on its own to struggle with preparing to respond to the event and then assessing and dealing with its damage. When assessments are not conducted quickly\, a community’s residents will reoccupy potentially unsafe structures. Small scale localized events can often be handled by local building departments. However\, in a large scale and/or large regional disaster\, local building departments are unable to meet the demand and often unable to provide these valuable assessments. The ICC Disaster Response Inspector Program is aimed at training and certifying qualified professionals to assist with performing Post-Disaster Building Safety Evaluations. It also discusses the NIMS credentialing process whereby properly trained and qualified Post-Disaster Building Safety Evaluators can be prequalified and rostered. By properly training and pre-qualifying a pool of individuals building officials are better able to jump start recovery.
