SUMMARY:Applications and Design for Horizontal Shear and Shear Friction in Concrete Structures
DESCRIPTION:In concrete members\, shear friction is considered for any interface between two concretes cast at different times\, between dissimilar materials\, as well as for any existing or potential crack. For composite concrete flexural members\, a shear interface is created when fresh concrete is placed against hardened concrete. Design for both shear friction and horizontal shear requires careful consideration for the transfer of forces across the interface. This webinar will discuss relevant provisions for the design of these interfaces in concrete structures. The discussion will also include an overview of changes from ACI 318-19 to ACI 318-25 along with requirements in the new ACI 319-25 for precast concrete structures.

SUMMARY:2024 IBC Significant Structural Changes and ASCE 7-22 (Live Online)
DESCRIPTION:This full-day seminar reviews and analyzes selected significant structural changes from the 2021 to the 2024 edition of the International Building Code (IBC). The program identifies the specific code changes that have occurred along with the reasoning behind the changes. Topics include changes to provisions for walls (Chapter 14)\, roofs (Chapter 15)\, structural design (Chapter 16)\, special inspections (Chapter 17)\, soils/foundations (Chapter 18) and materials including concrete\, masonry\, steel\, wood and glass (Chapters 19-24). Updated provisions for temporary structures (Chapter 31) will be discussed. Changes to the IBC-referenced 2022 ASCE/SEI 7 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures (ASCE 7-22) will also be presented. Environmental loads discussed include rain\, snow\, ice\, wind\, tornado\, earthquake\, tsunami and flood.

SUMMARY:Wood Roof Detailing for Wind Uplift
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 International Building Code (IBC) references ASCE 7-22 Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for Buildings and Other Structures. Component and cladding (C&C) roof wind pressures calculated using ASCE 7-22 were simplified but still require nail spacings for wood structural panels which are significantly reduced from pre-2021 IBC prescribed minimums. Uplift connectors for gable endwall rake overhang outlookers to the endwall require engineering or can be sized based on prescriptive tables to account for C&C loads at roof edges. Uplift connectors at rafter or truss bearings are based on main wind force resisting system loads. The 2024 IBC and other code-referenced standards\, updated to ASCE 7-22\, have uplift connection load tables that can be used to size roof-to-wall uplift connections.

SUMMARY:IEBC Concepts for Design Professionals (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:IEBC can be a misunderstood document used by design professionals when one is working on an existing building. We will discuss the applicable process if one has a damaged existing structure or if one is undertaking a remodeling/alteration the correct process one should follow. Dialogue/Discussion is encouraged the definitions matter as to the concepts found within the code as do the exceptions\, as the misapplication of the code and its concepts can be costly if applied inappropriately. We will discuss the work area methods and scoping.

SUMMARY:2024 IBC Essentials (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class focuses on the basic concepts of the 2024 International Building Code (IBC). These concepts provide a basis for the correct utilization of the code. A clear understanding of the identified requirements allows the code user to apply the IBC in specific situations and helps to build an understanding of the intent of the code when asked to make a judgment on code compliance. This class will also help the code user to correctly locate code requirements. It will also provide a basis for the correct use and application of the code as well as to begin to develop a procedure for applying them. It will address the organization of the code and how it relates to the IBC family of International Codes (I-Codes).

SUMMARY:Structural Bolting - Materials\, Installation\, and Inspection
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will discuss three principal elements of structural bolting. The first element is the bolts\, nuts\, and washers typically used in steel construction\, as well as special topics such as direct tension indicators\, reaction and backing washers\, and coating systems. Included will be product identification\, certification\, and product storage. This will be followed by discussion on bare\, coated\, and galvanized faying surfaces\, and on the various methods to produce bolt holes and bolt hole quality requirements. \nThe second element is installation methods for snug-tightened\, pretensioned\, and slip-critical joints\, including the turn-of-nut method\, the combined method\, the twist-off tension control bolt method\, the direct tension indicator method\, and the calibrated wrench method\, including an overview of the tools that may be used and their limitations. Pre-installation verification testing and rotational-capacity testing will also be discussed. \nThe third element includes bolting inspection requirements in accordance with both the RCSC and the AISC 360 Specifications. Arbitration methods will be addressed. The new requirements in the 2025 RCSC Specification addressing the contractor’s responsibilities and the qualifications of bolting personnel will also be presented.

SUMMARY:2024 IRC Loads – Snow\, Wind and Seismic (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:Mid-career residential inspectors and plans examiners will find this seminar insightful as will designers looking for a review of changes to snow\, wind and seismic requirements in the 2024 IRC. The IRC has a new snow map that changes snow loads in most areas of the country. Some snow loads go up\, others down\, some change by 2%\, a few by nearly 40%. It is important to understand changes for your local area. Component and cladding loads updated with a simplification of roof areas for steeper pitched gable roofs. For buildings in higher wind areas\, where winds are more than 115 mph\, nailing patterns for roof sheathing may change as well as nailing for roof cladding. Lastly seismic load application is clarified and restraint of appliances is expanded.

SUMMARY:Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) in United States has had humble beginnings but has made huge strides over the past couple of decades. A majority of tall buildings in western United States are currently being designed using PBEE principles rather than prescriptive code procedures. Successful further development of PBEE requires close collaboration between researchers and practicing engineers. Currently PBEE is undergoing a very important transition from its first generation of methodologies to a new and fully probabilistic approach. For such a transition to be successful a number of research needs and practical requirements must be addressed in a timely and cooperative manner. These needs vary from meaningful definition of desired performance objectives\, consequences of not meeting these objectives\, dependable characterization of system and component level fragility specifications\, meaningful representation of earthquake ground motions\, improved understanding of the performance of structure and its contents\, soil-foundation-structure interaction\, and bridging the gap between and advancing both experimental research and our analytical capabilities. This presentation will briefly discuss these issues and provide examples of problems and solutions that the speaker has encountered in dealing with these needs. The provisions of the newly released LATBSDC Guidelines will be also discussed.

SUMMARY:Inspector Skills (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class addresses the necessary soft skills for success as an inspector—those non-technical traits and behaviors that enhance an inspector’s ability to interact with others and to successfully carry out their job duties. These include people skills such as effective communication\, diplomacy and customer service\, but also include skills for problem solving\, professionalism\, integrity\, and time management. In addition to a solid understanding of the technical provisions of the codes\, developing appropriate soft skills are essential in pursuing the goal of safe\, healthy and durable buildings for the community. Developed specifically for construction inspectors in all disciplines\, the topics covered are equally important to all employees of public service agencies including permit technicians\, plan reviewers\, managers\, building officials and fire code officials. The information is also beneficial for developing policies and procedures to promote consistent and fair inspection practices while improving communications and public relations.
