Webinar: Seismic Design Guidelines for Solid and Perforated Hybrid Precast Concrete Shear Walls

This presentation will discuss recommended seismic design and detailing guidelines for special hybrid panelized precast concrete shear walls (with and without perforations), including supporting experimental evidence from six 0.4-scale test specimens and a full-scale worked design example. Hybrid precast walls use a combination of deformed Grade 60 bars and high-strength unbonded posttensioning strands for lateral resistance across horizontal joints. The mild steel bars crossing the base joint are designed to yield in tension and compression, providing energy dissipation. The unbonded posttensioning steel provides self-centering capability to reduce the residual lateral displacements of the structure after a large earthquake. The proposed design guidelines include important detailing considerations for the reinforcement at the base as well as the upper floor joints and around the panel perforations. These recommendations are aimed to allow practicing engineers and precast concrete producers to design ACI-compliant special hybrid precast shear walls with predictable and reliable seismic behavior. Ultimately, the results from this project, which was funded by the Charles Pankow Foundation and the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, support the U.S. code approval and practical application of the hybrid precast wall system as a special reinforced concrete shear wall for moderate and high seismic regions.
