SUMMARY:PART 4 - An Overview of the Structural Changes to the 2024 IBC
DESCRIPTION:As is well known by now\, changes in a new edition of the IBC result primarily from changes in the referenced standards adopted by the IBC. The primary reference standards that have changed from the 2021 to the 2024 IBC are: ASCE 7-22 replacing ASCE 7-16 (including Supplement 1); TMS 402/602-2022\, in place of TMS 402/602-2016; AISC 360-22 and 341-22 instead of AISC 360-16 and 341-16; and NDS-2024 in place of NDS- 2018. The concrete standard remains unchanged at ACI 318-19. \nPart 4 will be on Temporary Structures and changes in NDS 2024.

SUMMARY:Designing Mass Timber Construction to Mitigate the Potential for Disproportionate Collapse
DESCRIPTION:Since the Ronan Point Apartments incident in 1968\, there has been a push to inculcate design and detailing measures into mid and high rise buildings that would mitigate the potential for disproportionate collapse in the wake of an extreme loading event (e.g.\, explosion). At the present time\, UFC 4-023-03 “Design of Buildings to Resist Progressive Collapse“ is used by the Department of Defense\, Department of State\, and other entities to define design requirements aimed at reducing the potential for disproportionate collapse. Since 2016 (i.e.\, the year UFC 4-023-03 was last updated)\, there has been growth in the use of mass timber structural systems in buildings constructed in the United States. As such\, an effort was recently completed that updated UFC 4-023-03 specifically for mass timber systems. This presentation describes the updated provisions to UFC 4-023-03. Furthermore\, a design example that illustrates the primary strategies that can be utilized to mitigate the potential for disproportionate collapse of mass timber buildings is described in detail. K&C\, LERA\, and KPFF\, who each have experience in designing mass timber structures for progressive collapse resistance\, worked closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Protective Design Center to develop these UFC 4-023-03 updates.

SUMMARY:Designing for Durability and Safety: Seismic\, Fire\, and Construction Considerations for Mass Timber Connections
DESCRIPTION:Mass timber continues to rise in popularity for its sustainability and structural performance – but ensuring the safety and longevity of these systems requires careful attention to connection design. This webinar examines how mass timber beam connections can meet critical requirements for seismic deformation compatibility\, fire resistance\, and durability during and after construction.

SUMMARY:Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) in United States has had humble beginnings but has made huge strides over the past couple of decades. A majority of tall buildings in western United States are currently being designed using PBEE principles rather than prescriptive code procedures. Successful further development of PBEE requires close collaboration between researchers and practicing engineers. Currently PBEE is undergoing a very important transition from its first generation of methodologies to a new and fully probabilistic approach. For such a transition to be successful a number of research needs and practical requirements must be addressed in a timely and cooperative manner. These needs vary from meaningful definition of desired performance objectives\, consequences of not meeting these objectives\, dependable characterization of system and component level fragility specifications\, meaningful representation of earthquake ground motions\, improved understanding of the performance of structure and its contents\, soil-foundation-structure interaction\, and bridging the gap between and advancing both experimental research and our analytical capabilities. This presentation will briefly discuss these issues and provide examples of problems and solutions that the speaker has encountered in dealing with these needs. The provisions of the newly released LATBSDC Guidelines (scheduled for release on May 15\, 2020) will be also discussed.

SUMMARY:What Can Structural Engineers Do to Address the Problem of Floor Vibrations?
DESCRIPTION:Floor vibrations are becoming an increasingly important design challenge as more buildings are constructed (or remodeled) to contain vibration-sensitive occupancies. Some examples are fitness gyms\, dance floors\, biotech research facilities\, micro- and nano-scale manufacturing facilities\, medical occupancies (such as MRI\, CAT scan\, and micro-surgery suites)\, and data centers. In addition\, building owners and tenants have developed a heightened awareness of\, and lower tolerance for\, floor vibrations that can be felt by humans. Thus\, as structural engineers\, we are now frequently called upon to design\, or renovate\, buildings to meet specific floor vibration criteria. This presentation provides an overview of what is common practice for limiting floor vibrations.

SUMMARY:2024 IBC Essentials (Online Live)
DESCRIPTION:This class focuses on the basic concepts of the 2024 International Building Code (IBC). These concepts provide a basis for the correct utilization of the code. A clear understanding of the identified requirements allows the code user to apply the IBC in specific situations and helps to build an understanding of the intent of the code when asked to make a judgment on code compliance. This class will also help the code user to correctly locate code requirements. It will also provide a basis for the correct use and application of the code as well as to begin to develop a procedure for applying them. It will address the organization of the code and how it relates to the IBC family of International Codes (I-Codes).

SUMMARY:Shear Wall Design Methods – 2024 WFCM and 2021 SDPWS (Learn Live)
DESCRIPTION:Two AWC standards utilized throughout the nation for a code compliant design of wood shear walls are 2024 Wood Frame Construction Manual (WFCM) for One- and Two-Family Dwellings and 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS). The WFCM contains both a prescriptive and engineering design approach. While the prescriptive design method will readily yield solutions that tend to be more conservative\, the engineered design method will often yield more efficient design solutions. This seminar includes examples of seismic and wind shear wall designs for segmented and perforated shear walls\, utilizing the WFCM and the SDPWS along with a comparison of the results.

\nPresenters will review key provisions from ASCE 7\, IBC\, and CSA O86:24\, and share findings from recent testing on concealed beam hangers and steel fasteners. Attendees will learn how to detail connections that perform reliably under seismic drift\, fire exposure\, and fluctuating environmental conditions common on construction sites.

SUMMARY:PART 2 - An Overview of Significant Changes in ACI 318-25
DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete was released at the end of January 2025\, although a printed version is still not available as of mid-July. It is expected to be adopted by the 2027 IBC. \nACI 318-25 introduces significant updates\, including a new sustainability appendix and a new appendix on performance-based wind design\, revised requirements for post-installed reinforcing bars\, and enhanced provisions for shear friction. Additional updates include improvements to deep foundation requirements across all seismic design categories and clarified guidelines for cantilever and basement wall shear design. \nThe document also features numerous advancements in seismic design provisions (including significant relief from the severe shear design requirements for special shear walls in ACI 318-19)\, and modifications to development length equations. Enhanced language on the development\, embedment\, and anchorage of reinforcement\, as well as new strength reduction factors for breakout failure\, are also included\, along with updated guidance for developing closely spaced bars in tension.
