SUMMARY:PART 1 - An Overview of Significant Changes in ACI 318-25
DESCRIPTION:The latest edition of ACI 318 Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete was released at the end of January\, 2025\, although a printed version is still not available as of mid-July. It is expected to be adopted by the 2027 IBC. \nACI 318-25 introduces significant updates\, including a new sustainability appendix and a new appendix on performance-based wind design\, revised requirements for post-installed reinforcing bars\, and enhanced provisions for shear friction. Additional updates include improvements to deep foundation requirements across all seismic design categories and clarified guidelines for cantilever and basement wall shear design. \nThe document also features numerous advancements in seismic design provisions (including significant relief from the severe shear design requirements for special shear walls in ACI 318-19)\, and modifications to development length equations. Enhanced language on the development\, embedment\, and anchorage of reinforcement\, as well as new strength reduction factors for breakout failure\, are also included\, along with updated guidance for developing closely spaced bars in tension.

SUMMARY:Design of Post-Tensioned One-Way Slabs and Beams of Long Span Garages
DESCRIPTION:Long span garages are very common across the United States and are typically designed using relatively thin post-tensioned one-way slabs that are supported by post-tensioned beams and girders. The beams will often span in the 60-foot range and will typically require no camber due to proper use of post-tensioning. The webinar will highlight the design steps of post-tensioned one-way slabs and beams that are typical for long span garages while addressing the relevant code sections. Typical details that are associated with these types of structures will also be shown in conjunction with construction photographs.

SUMMARY:Designing Mass Timber Construction for Blast Loading
DESCRIPTION:There has been a notable expansion of the use of mass timber construction in North America in recent years. Sustainability and aesthetics are key drivers for mass timber construction\, and the robustness of panelized products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) opens new possibilities in protective construction. To better understand mass timber’s performance under blast loading\, a series of blast tests involving various types of mass timber have been performed. This presentation describes the current state of the science related to designing mass timber construction for blast loading.

SUMMARY:New Seismic Design Provisions for One-Story Structures with Flexible Diaphragms and Rigid Vertical Elements
DESCRIPTION:It has long been recognized that the seismic response of one-story tilt-up concrete wall buildings (and similar buildings with flexible diaphragms and rigid vertical elements) is controlled by the flexible diaphragm much more than the rigid vertical elements. Widely used seismic design provisions have not recognized or incorporated this behavior\, however. Now\, new seismic design provisions recently developed for ASCE 7-22 explicitly recognize this response behavior\, drawing from extensive numerical studies published in the guideline document Seismic Design of Rigid Wall-Flexible Diaphragm Buildings: An Alternate Procedure (FEMA P-1026) and supplemental studies of bare steel deck diaphragms. In fact\, the new design provisions go a step further to introduce a zone of reduced shear demand that improves seismic performance by allowing distributed yielding away from the diaphragm perimeter. This webinar will first present the concepts behind the new seismic design provisions\, and the numerical studies addressed in FEMA P-1026 and supplemental bare steel deck diaphragm studies. A design example will then be presented\, along with design and detailing tips and recommendations for practicing engineers.

SUMMARY:Wind Loads on Open Projecting Attached Porches
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore application of uplift and shear loads on gable-\, hip- and shed-type porches for main wind-force resisting system (MWFRS) wind loads parallel and perpendicular to a building face. It will also include assessment of component and cladding (C&C) uplift loads for rafters\, sheathing and sheathing attachment. Inset or partially inset porches are not evaluated nor are roof lines extending as an overhang over the porch. ASCE 7-16 wind load provisions will be evaluated including selection of applicable pressure coefficients. Prescriptive solutions for uplift and lateral loads will be presented. A draft document outlining this methodology and assumptions is being developed and peer review is welcome.

SUMMARY:Deep Foundations - Overview and Design Example
DESCRIPTION:Deep foundation systems provide improved resistance to settlement and can safely support buildings founded on very poor soils. Deep foundations can also improve building performance by providing resistance to uplift loading. The design of deep foundations involves both the Geotechnical Engineer and the Structural Engineer. Thus\, it is wise for the structural engineer to become more educated regarding deep foundation design. This presentation will provide an overview of deep foundations\, including various systems in common use\, such as driven precast concrete and structural steel piles\, augercast piles\, cast-in-drilled-hole piles\, and micropiles. Mr. Harris will discuss the behavior of each system\, as well as its best uses and limitations. The presentation will also include a worked example design for cast-in-place concrete piles resisting vertical and lateral loads.
