FEMA publishes post-disaster building safety evaluation document

As we continue to analyze recent natural disasters and prepare for the increased frequency and severity of future disasters, the International Code Council is pleased to share FEMA P-2055: Post-Disaster Building Safety Evaluation Guidance, published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

As required by the Disaster Recovery Reform Act of 2018, Section 1241: Post-disaster Building Safety Assessment, FEMA P-2055 addresses the current state of practice for post-disaster building safety evaluation, including recommendations related to structural and nonstructural safety and habitability. Created for the use and benefit of stakeholder groups, including architects, engineers, building officials, emergency managers, health officials and policymakers, FEMA P-2055 summarizes and references best practice guideline documents, identifies areas of need and provides interim recommendations. It also proposes guidance for pre-disaster program planning and post-disaster management and implementation.

The Code Council is proud to have collaborated with FEMA to develop this important document. Code Council members participated in the draft policy and staff reviewed the document throughout its various iterations and provided regular feedback.
