Advancing the Future of Construction: A New Standard for 3D Printed Wall Systems

As 3D printing continues to transform industries around the world, construction is entering a new era of innovation.

The International Code Council’s (ICC) newly established Standard for Automated Construction Technology for 3D Printing Walls (ICC 1150) provides the framework needed to safely bring cutting-edge 3D printing into the construction industry.

What is the ICC 1150?

Designed to support the next generation of residential and commercial structures, the standard establishes minimum requirements for the materials, qualification, inspection and structural design of 3D printed walls and their connections. It applies to both interior and exterior wall systems produced with cementitious materials and aligns with the intent and performance objectives of modern building codes.

Recognizing the unique capabilities of additive construction, the standard addresses a wide range of wall configurations, including load-bearing, non-load-bearing and shear walls for one-story and multi-story buildings. ICC 1150 provides criteria applicable to 3D automated construction technology and 3D Concrete used to construct interior and exterior 3D Concrete walls, with or without structural steel reinforcing, used as bearing walls, non-load bearing walls and shear walls, in one-story or multi-story structures.

Beyond establishing a path to code compliance, the standard serves as an enabler of innovation. It provides comprehensive guidance for material qualification, structural design under gravity, wind, and limited seismic loading, reinforcement detailing and construction quality assurance. At the same time, it allows flexibility for emerging technologies and proprietary materials when equivalent performance can be demonstrated through testing.

Key Provisions Include:

  • Material specifications for cementitious components, aggregates, admixtures, fibers and water
  • Requirements for batching, mixing, curing, and material testing
  • Laboratory qualification procedures addressing strength, durability and fire performance properties
  • Structural design criteria for gravity, wind and seismic loads
  • Design requirements for axial, flexural, shear, bearing and combined loading conditions
  • Provisions for interlayer bonding and interbead shear resistance
  • Reinforcement detailing for walls, openings, intersections, bond beams and headers
  • Connection requirements between walls, foundations, floors and roof systems

The Latest in Building Technology

By establishing a consistent and technically rigorous framework, this standard represents a major milestone in the adoption of 3D printed construction. It gives engineers, architects, contractors and code officials the confidence to embrace advanced automated building methods while maintaining the safety, resiliency and performance expected of modern structures.

As the industry continues to push the boundaries of what is possible, this standard stands at the forefront of building technology, accelerating the transition from traditional construction practices to a smarter, faster and more innovative future.

ICC 1150 became ANSI approved on July 15, 2026.
