SolarAPP+ First Automated Permitting Platform to Pass Independent ICC Audit of Code Provisions
Evaluation found SolarAPP+ accurately reflects the applicable requirements of the 2024 International Residential Code® (IRC) and International Fire Code® (IFC) and the 2023 National Electrical Code® (NEC).
The International Code Council (ICC) and the SolarAPP Foundation have shared the results from the first independent code audit – conducted by ICC technical staff – of an automated permitting platform for consistency with the requirements of relevant model code provisions.
Jurisdictions increasingly rely on software for calculations and to review or pre-screen permit applications, check plans, and document code compliance. Building and fire officials need confidence that those tools accurately reflect the codes and editions they enforce. Through its Code Compliance Software Evaluations program, ICC Expert Services independently evaluates code compliance software against the applicable editions of the International Codes® (I-Codes®) and referenced standards and publishes the results.
The review of SolarAPP+, conducted from May 2 to August 31, 2026, was iterative. The SolarAPP Foundation updated the platform or provided clarification for each comment, and ICC verified that all identified items were addressed. ICC’s review team examined six SolarAPP+ project reports, one from each of the platform’s System Design Categories, including three Fire Bulletin artifacts. For each report, ICC reviewed the project inputs, inspection checklists and related output against the applicable code requirements. No finding required a change to the platform’s underlying calculation logic.
Ultimately, ICC determined that the SolarAPP+ platform accurately reflects the applicable requirements of the 2024 editions of two of the I-Codes: the International Residential Code® (IRC) and the International Fire Code® (IFC). The review also found that the platform accurately reflects the applicable requirements of the 2023 edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s National Electrical Code® (NEC).
