Advancing Building Safety: International Code Council Collaborates with MoHUP to Develop Oman’s Building Codes

In a significant step towards enhancing building safety and construction standards in the Middle East, the International Code Council will be collaborating with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning (MoHUP) in the Sultanate of Oman to develop a series of six comprehensive building codes tailored to the nation’s specific needs.

On February 14, 2024, His Excellency, the Minister of Housing, representing MoHUP, and the International Code Council’s Senior Vice President of Global Operations and Solutions, Judy Zakreski, joined efforts for a ceremonial signing in Muscat to formalize this agreement.

“We are honored to collaborate with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning on this exciting and important project,” said Zakreski. “The Oman Building Codes will serve as a blueprint for safe, sustainable and resilient construction practices in the country and harmonize Oman’s building safety regulations with others in the MENA region.”

This strategic cooperation between the International Code Council and MoHUP underscores a shared responsibility to advance safety, sustainability and innovation in Oman’s construction industry.

The Importance of Building Codes for Public Safety

With the country’s rapid infrastructure growth and expanding urban development, the demand for robust building codes prioritizing safety and resilience has become increasingly crucial. Collaboratively, the International Code Council and MoHUP are dedicated to setting new benchmarks in building safety and construction practices in the country.

The Sultanate’s adoption of International Codes®(I-Codes) will serve as a catalyst for raising standards and promoting best practices throughout the country. By adopting advanced building regulations that align with the building standards used throughout the region, the country is not only ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens but also positioning itself as a leader in ensuring safety in sustainable and resilient construction.

Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Hanan Al Jabri, Director General of Urban Planning at the MoHUP, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This partnership with the International Code Council marks a significant step within Oman’s construction industry. The development of the Oman Building Codes represents a significant milestone in the journey towards achieving the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.”

Throughout the project duration, the International Code Council and MoHUP will work closely with designated Omani authorities, design professionals and other stakeholders to ensure that the Oman Building Codes are comprehensive and reflective of the nation’s aspirations and priorities. This inclusive approach ensures consistency and harmonization, ultimately leading to the desired outcomes that will benefit Oman’s construction industry and its citizens.
