On Friday, May 3, the City of Alexandria, VA, held its 12th annual Building Safety Month kickoff event, bringing together city officials, code professionals and community members. This year’s event mirrored the International Code Council’s theme of “Mission Possible”, emphasizing the importance of building safety and celebrating the professionals who work tirelessly to keep the public safe.

The celebration featured a proclamation signing by Mayor Justin Wilson, officially declaring May as Building Safety Month in Alexandria. This proclamation underscored the city’s commitment to building safety and its dedication to protecting residents through the implementation and enforcement of building codes.

City Manager James Parajon delivered a speech emphasizing the critical role of building codes in ensuring public safety. His remarks were followed by a keynote address from a special guest, who further highlighted the importance of the campaign’s theme and the need for continuous improvement in building safety best practices.

The celebration also included two free training sessions held at Alexandria City Hall and several informative exhibits, providing attendees with valuable information on building safety measures.

The City of Alexandria’s Building Safety Month kickoff was not just a celebration but a call to action. It was a reminder to their community that building safety is a shared responsibility and that through awareness, education and community engagement, we can achieve the “Mission Possible” of creating safer, more resilient communities.
