The Elk Grove Village Building Division of the Community Development Department recently became the first in the state of Illinois to receive a Certificate of Accreditation by the International Accreditation Service (IAS), a member of the International Code Council family of solutions.

This full accreditation status allows the Elk Grove Village Building Division to join 23 other building departments throughout the United States that have achieved this accreditation.

The Essential Work of the Building Division

The Elk Grove Village Building Division is responsible for the review and approval of design drawings and enforcement of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, accessibility and energy codes associated with private construction. They also ensure compliance with the Zoning Ordinance and Property Maintenance Code.

Achieving accreditation from IAS involves an assessment of the Building Division’s goals, policies and procedures, as well as permitting, inspections and plan reviews.

The Building Division began preparing for the IAS Accreditation in 2020 by performing a third-party review of all its processes and procedures to meet the high accreditation standards. IAS then performed a four-day assessment where it evaluated the Building Division based on several categories including customer service, technical competence, code interpretation and fiscal health.

Moving forward, the Building Division will undergo a review for an additional 18 months and be reassessed through the full accreditation renewal process every three years. This renewal process helps the Building Division continuously evaluate their service goals and best practices to stay on top of current trends and methods within the built environment.

IAS Accreditation

IAS accreditation demonstrates that building departments have met the national standard and are competent to provide public safety services for their communities.
