The importance of safe drinking water

The Flint, Mich., water crisis highlights the importance of safe drinking water. Lifetime’s movie “Flint” is a drama based on the ongoing water crisis due to excessive levels of lead in Flint, Mich., and depicts the events in Flint from the perspective of the families and advocates. Through the tireless and persistent work of the Flint families and advocates, worldwide attention was brought to water issues. Lifetime hopes the movie will encourage further action at all levels of government to support people exposed to lead and other toxins in drinking water.

The International Code Council (ICC) attended a panel discussion and viewing of the Lifetime movie at the Capitol Visitor Center Congressional Auditorium in October 2017. Panelists included Congressman Dan Kildee (D-MI) and Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN).

Misty Guard, ICC vice president of Plumbing, Mechanical, Fuel Gas, Swimming Pool & Spa, and Private Sewage Disposal Programs, attended the viewing. “The Code Council supports water infrastructure improvements and policies that ensure safe drinking water is delivered to our homes and businesses. Lifetime’s movie ‘Flint’ highlights the importance of updated, modern infrastructure for Flint and for the estimated 5,600 other communities with drinking water concerns,” said Guard.
