ASID supports the International Codes

September 27th, 2018

  • Quick Hits

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) recently offered its support for the adoption of the most recent edition of the coordinated family of International Codes (I-Codes) published by the International Code Council. Click here to read the statement of support from ASID Chief Executive Officer Randy W. Fiser, Hon. FASID.

“Keeping building and fire safety standards current, coordinated and uniform creates consistency for businesses, design professionals, and contractors and provides regularity through one set of regulations and code provisions,” stated ASID Chief Executive Officer Randy W. Fiser in the letter. “A coordinated set of codes eliminates duplicative requirements that would have significant impact on heavily regulated buildings such as hospitals. Updating to the latest family of model codes ensures uniform application of the latest building technology requirements, energy efficiency provisions, and safety considerations. This uniformity not only protects the lives of residents and first responders, but also appeals to private businesses and construction practitioners.”

As a co-sponsor of week five of Building Safety Month, which focused on Improving Education & Training Standards for a Safer Tomorrow, and a supporting organization of the Coalition for Current Safety Codes, ASID has forged a relationship with the International Code Council that focuses on the continued joint work to support the health, safety and welfare of building occupants.

The Coalition for Current Safety Codes — founded by the International Code Council and the National Fire Protection Association — is aimed at advancing safety by advocating for the adoption of current building, sustainability, electrical and life safety codes. This coalition increases public awareness and support for the adoption of codes that protect health and welfare. More than 480 coalition members — involved in the codes and standards community, industry and public safety — work together to ensure the U.S. remains the leader in the industrialized world, providing the safest built environment and the most contemporary and effective safety precautions for our citizens.
