Texas Adopts 2024 International Codes® to Strengthen Safety and Resilience

August 5th, 2026
by International Code Council
  • Quick Hits

Texas is moving to strengthen building safety and resilience with the adoption of three updated building codes: the 2024 International Mechanical Code® (IMC), 2024 International Fuel Gas Code® (IFGC) and 2024 International Residential Code® (IRC). The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) approved the codes following an extensive review process.

Building codes establish the minimum requirements to ensure safe and resilient structures, and benefits of adoption include cost savings and casualty prevention.

The IMC establishes minimum regulations for mechanical systems using prescriptive and performance-related provisions. The IFGC establishes minimum regulations for the installation of fuel gas piping systems and equipment, along with gaseous hydrogen systems. The IRC comprises all building, plumbing, mechanical, fuel gas, energy conservation and electrical requirements for one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses up to three stories.

By adopting the 2024 IMC, IFGC and IRC, Texas sets a precedent for other states to evaluate current codes and practices and to adopt updated codes that promote safety, resilience and sustainability in the built environment.

Sustainable and Affordable Solutions

Regularly updating the codes is essential to improving safety, efficiency and environmental performance while ensuring the industry keeps pace with advances in technology and evolving best practices. By maintaining modern construction standards the industry is better equipped to address emerging challenges, support innovation and deliver more sustainable and cost-effective solutions for consumers.

The adoption of modern building codes helps protect occupants, enhance long-term building performance and reduce the overall cost of homeownership. By promoting higher construction standards, these codes can also prevent costly repairs and inefficiencies that often arise over time.

Adoption of the 2024 IMC, IFGC and IRC will go into effect in Texas on Sept. 1, 2026. Read more about the adoption here.
