Code Council, NBBI Sign MOU for Greater Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety

October 1st, 2010
by International Code Council
  • Press Releases

The International Code Council (ICC) and National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (NBBI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the ultimate objective of advancing and promoting the mutual interests of the installation and inspection of boilers and pressure equipment.

Each organization’s individual depth of experience and strengths in the boiler and pressure vessel arena complement one another. Since NBBI focuses on the inspection side of boiler and pressure vessels whereas the Code Council’s core competency is related to the installations and other code-specific applications, the strengths of these two organizations result in an optimal collaboration.

“We have devoted a good deal of time developing this MOU to ensure it optimally benefits our mutual memberships and the general public,” said Dave Douin, Executive Director of NBBI. “We look forward to working with the Code Council on many important and exciting programs that will advance our industry and enhance public safety overall.”

This team will collaborate on a multitude of initiatives, concentrating on those designed to improve boiler and pressure vessel safety, increase installation efficiency, and improve the most widely adopted codes that inspectors follow and enforce.

The organizations will also work to optimize the efficiency of resources, increase reach to key industry segments, and will reciprocally promote products that are beneficial to their respective member bases. Promoting existing and co-developing expanded and enhanced education programs, conferences, publications, and codes for more uniform application and implementation are also target areas for cooperation.

This teaming of efforts will encourage the participation of subject matter experts on respective technical initiatives, including, but not exclusive to committees and councils. Part of these efforts includes support and advancement of cooperative standards and code development that will benefit the entire boiler and pressure vessel equipment industry.

“Collaborating with a highly respected and experienced group of boiler and pressure equipment professionals as NBBI is a privilege for the Code Council,” said Jay Peters, Executive Director of ICC’s Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Group. “We can’t wait to get started with initiatives that will dramatically improve the effectiveness of inspections and the safety of the public.”

All of the cooperative efforts will focus primarily on continuing to advance the boiler and pressure vessel equipment science and the technology that supports each organization’s respective research and technology programs. The ultimate objective is to bring the memberships’ parallel paths closer together to improve public safety through consistent implementation of a harmonized and consistent model mechanical code.

The International Code Council, a membership association dedicated to building safety, fire prevention and energy efficiency, develops the codes used to construct residential and commercial buildings, including homes and schools. Most U.S. cities, counties and states choose the International Codes, building safety codes developed by the International Code Council. The International Codes also serve as the basis for construction of federal properties around the world, and as a reference for many nations outside the United States.

The ICC’s Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) Group is devoted exclusively to providing PMG products and support to jurisdictions and construction industry professionals across the country and around the globe, with one or more PMG codes adopted in 49 states. The more than 200 superior products and related services were developed specifically by and for plumbing and mechanical professionals.
