ICC Recognizes NAHB Greenbuild Partnership

Partnerships are leading the way in green commercial and residential construction

The International Code Council (ICC) has announced its support for the Greenbuild and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) new strategic partnership. As a result of the partnership, Greenbuild will feature more residential offerings this year, including sessions focused on both multi-family and single-family at the November conference. In addition to NAHB, Greenbuild top tier partners are the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and BOMA International.

“Partnerships are leading the way to educate code officials, architects, designers, builders and all segments of the construction industry about building green to achieve energy efficiency and reduce the carbon footprint,” said ICC Chief Executive Office Dominic Sims, CBO. “We congratulate NAHB and Greenbuild for their action.”

ICC and ASHRAE recently signed an agreement that outlined each organization’s role in the development and maintenance of the 2018 International Green Construction Code (IgCC). A partnership effort will develop the 2018 IgCC, powered by the ANSI/ASHRAE/ICC/Illuminating Engineering Society/U.S. Green Building Council Standard 189.1 for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings.

The IgCC focuses on new and existing commercial buildings, addressing affordable green building design and performance. It provides the building industry with language that broadens and strengthens building codes to accelerate the construction of high-performance, green buildings. It also provides jurisdictions a way to regulate green commercial construction for the design and performance of new and renovated buildings. The IgCC is coordinated with existing codes, allowing buildings to reap the rewards of improved design and construction practices.

ICC partnered with NAHB and ASHRAE to develop the 2015 edition of the ICC/ASHRAE 700 National Green Building Standard. The Standard provides green practices for new homes, including high-rise multifamily buildings, home remodeling and additions, hotels and motels. It offers four threshold levels—bronze, silver, gold, and emerald—to provide builders with a means to achieve basic, entry-level green building, or achieve the highest level of sustainable “green” building with energy savings of 60 percent or higher. The Standard can be used for individual projects, or as a local community or statewide green building program.

About us: The International Code Council is a member-focused association. It is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.
