Washington, D.C. – Today the International Code Council joins organizations from across the globe in commemorating World Water Day. This global campaign raises awareness about the importance of water in our everyday lives and the critical water challenges we face in the 21 stcentury from high demand in areas of low availability to quality issues and the disruptive effects of natural disasters. According to the 2018 United Nations World Water Development Report:
- 2.1 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water services.
- Around 1.9 billion people live in potentially severely water-scarce areas.
- Over 80% of the wastewater generated by society flows back into the environment without being treated or reused.
- The number of people at risk from floods is projected to rise from 1.2 billion today to around 1.6 billion in 2050 – nearly 20% of the world’s population.
The Code Council is dedicated to helping solve these problems through modern building codes and standards that lead to resilient communities, safe plumbing, efficient technologies and a well-trained, professional workforce of code officials and plumbing professionals to maintain these systems. The International Codes are a family of fifteen coordinated building codes developed by the Code Council and used throughout the U.S. and in many other countries that ensure safe plumbing systems in both residential and commercials buildings.
“Though World Water Day comes just once a year, the Code Council works year round to ensure that our families and communities have the safest, most resilient structures to protect against floods, hurricanes and other modern-day disasters,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “In addition, our Family of Companies helps facilitate the quick adoption of new water efficient products into homes and structures and promotes the need for smart water use.”
Code Council partners are also celebrating World Water Day.
“Plumbing Manufacturers International supports all efforts to assure clean and plentiful water resources around the globe. As manufacturers of plumbing products, we work every day to deliver water resources that are safe, sustainable and accessible to more people. We take our responsibility as stewards of ‘safe, responsible plumbing’ very seriously,” said CEO and Executive Director of Plumbing Manufacturers International Kerry Stackpole, FASAE CAE.
“The Irrigation Association is pleased to stand with ICC and others in supporting World Water Day,” said IA’s Government and Public Affairs Director John Farner. “Water is the lifeblood of all plants. Through efficient irrigation, our industry ensures these plants get what they need, without wasting any of our society’s most precious resource: water.”
