The International Code Council and the Association of State Floodplain Managers sign memorandum of understanding
Alliance will focus on the organizations’ mutual interest in protecting wetlands and floodplains
Washington, D.C. – Today the International Code Council and the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance the partnership between the two organizations, recognizing the mission code officials and floodplain managers share in protecting communities and the environment. The signing event took place at ASFPM’s annual national conference at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.
The Code Council and ASFPM will work together to promote sound policies that reduce the negative effects of flooding on human life, buildings and property, communities, wildlife, and critical ecosystems. Representatives from both organizations will collaborate on the development of issue papers, advocate for responsible development in accordance with national codes and standards, and collaborate on mutually beneficial training and education.
“This agreement is the first step to working more closely with ASFPM on issues of common interest to our members,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “Together our organizations will develop actionable strategies to help communities plan for a safer future.”
“Both of our organizations share a passion for reducing disaster losses and increasing community resilience. It only makes sense that we would enter into a more formal partnership and bring the resources of both of our organizations to bear on these important national issues,” said ASFPM Executive Director Chad Berginnis, CFM.
Sims and Berginnis were joined at the signing event by Maria Cox Lamm, the State Coordinator for South Carolina’s Department of Natural Resources’ Flood Mitigation Program, and Donny Phipps, the Director of Building Codes and Inspections for Richmond County in Columbia, South Carolina. Phipps is also a Certified Building Official and Floodplain Manager and a member of the Code Council Board of Directors.
