ANCR committee member to judge competition

December 6th, 2018

  • Quick Hits

Nancy McNabb, AIA, was selected to serve on the jury for the National Institute of Building Sciences’ 2018 Beyond Green High-Performance Building and Community Awards, which recognize those buildings, initiatives and innovations that are influencing, informing and inspiring the high-performance planning, design, construction and operations processes. The jury is responsible for selecting those projects and activities that best exemplify the eight design objectives of high performance from all of the entries.

In April, McNabb joined the distinguished group of subject matter experts on the Resilient Buildings Technical Committee for the Alliance for National & Community Resilience (ANCR) — a member of the ICC Family of Companies — that will help develop the nation’s first community-wide resilience benchmarks related to buildings. The Resilient Buildings Technical Committee consists of architects, code officials, government experts and other industry professionals from the New York City Department of Buildings, Dow Chemical Company, National Institute of Building Sciences and more. These specialists will determine the criteria to evaluate a community’s capacity, risk awareness, competence and resources to respond to disasters or other events that affect the accessibility, quality or availability of homes, schools, stores and other buildings.

Formerly a staff architect with Building Officials and Code Administrators International, McNabb has experience with the New York State Department of State, Codes Division; the National Fire Protection Association; and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. As the manager of Building and Fire Codes and Standards of the Engineering Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, McNabb worked on codes and standards-related research to support strategic goals relating to sustainability, energy efficiency, safety, security and community resilience. She formed her own consulting firm in 2016 and joined The Continuity Project.

With her extensive experience in model building/fire codes and standards, she continues to utilize her expertise in community resilience planning, sustainability and energy efficiency before agencies and organizations tied to the building and safety community. McNabb recently served as the faculty member-in-residence with the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering. She currently serves as the chair of the Communications Committee on the National Institute of Building Sciences’ Multihazard Mitigation Council.

“I am excited to welcome the 2018 Beyond Green Awards jury,” said NIBS President Henry Green, Hon. AIA and a past president of the Code Council Board of Directors. “This jury has a wide range of experience in advancing and achieving innovative, high-performing facilities. I thank them for their participation and look forward to seeing which projects they select to receive Beyond Green Awards in January.”

The Institute will recognize the 2018 award winners on Jan. 9, 2019, during its Annual Awards Banquet. As part of the awards presentation, the Beyond Green High-Performance Building and Community Award winners have the opportunity to present their projects and highlight the challenges and opportunities they faced while delivering high-performance buildings.
