From Service to Skilled Trade: United Association’s Veterans in Piping Program

For those preparing to hang up the uniform, the future can feel uncertain. VIP provides something invaluable: a new mission. It offers veterans not just a job, but a career built on skill, stability and purpose.

The United Association (UA), which represents over 375,000 plumbers, pipefitters, welders and HVAC technicians across North America, launched their Veterans in Piping (VIP) Program to address two critical needs: supporting active-duty service members as they transition into civilian life, and filling the growing demand for skilled workers in the piping industry.

Over the course of 17 weeks, participants of the program can gain hands-on experience in disciplines such as welding, sprinkler fitting and HVAC-R. The training is offered on military bases, making it accessible for service members before their separation date.

The curriculum is industry-aligned, ensuring graduates are ready to step into high-demand roles. One of the program’s unique strengths is its focus on hands-on learning. Whether it is mastering precision welding techniques or installing fire suppression systems, participants spend most of their time working directly with the tools of the trade. This practical training not only builds skill but also instills confidence.

Guaranteed Placement and Long-Term Careers

Students who complete the program earn certifications recognized nationwide, giving them an immediate advantage in the civilian workforce.  

Graduating from the VIP Program means more than receiving a certificate, it means a guaranteed career opportunity. Every graduate is placed directly into a UA registered apprenticeship program with one of its affiliated local unions across the country. 

Apprenticeships provide competitive pay, healthcare benefits and retirement plans from day one. As apprentices advance, their wages increase until they achieve journeyman status. From there, the opportunities only grow, with many going on to become foremen, superintendents, instructors or even business owners. 

This structure ensures that the transition from service member to civilian is not only smooth, but also sustainable in the long term. Veterans gain both economic security and a renewed sense of mission through meaningful work. 

From Military Brotherhood to Union Brotherhood

One of the challenges veterans face after leaving service is the loss of camaraderie. The military fosters a strong sense of community and teamwork that can be difficult to replicate in civilian life. 

Graduates often point out that joining a UA local union feels like finding that camaraderie again. The union structure provides mentorship, shared purpose and collective support—qualities that resonate deeply with those who have worn the uniform. 

As one Marine veteran and program graduate put it, “In the military, you’re part of a team that looks out for you. In the union, it feels the same way—you’re never on your own.” 

A Win-Win-Win Model

The success of the VIP Program is rooted in its ability to meet the needs of all involved. Service members gain a solid career path. The UA strengthens its workforce with highly motivated, disciplined individuals. Contractors benefit from access to well-trained apprentices ready to contribute from day one. 

Mike Hazard, a UA training specialist and veteran himself, often describes the program as a “win-win-win.” It’s a model that not only supports military families but also strengthens industries that are vital to America’s infrastructure. 

Recognition and Growth

The UA VIP program serves all branches of the military and operates nine programs at seven different military installations, including: 

  • Camp Pendleton
  • Joint Base Lewis-McChord
  • Fort Hood
  • Fort Carson
  • Fort Campbell
  • Camp Lejeune
  • Naval Station Norfolk  

Since 2008, over 3,600 transitioning service members have graduated from the program with guaranteed employment.  

Unlike many U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) SkillBridge programs, VIP is completely tuition-free and does not require the use of GI Bill benefits. 

VIP has been praised as one of the most effective DoD SkillBridge programs in the nation, proving that with the right training and partnerships, the transition from military to civilian life can be both seamless and rewarding.
