Code Council’s Technical Training Program continues to thrive

February 12th, 2020

The High School Technical Training Program (HSTTP) is a signature program of the International Code Council’s Safety 2.0 portfolio of resources for new building safety professionals. The Safety 2.0 initiative provides easy access to Code Council programs and materials produced for individuals interested in learning more about careers in building safety.

The Code Council’s HSTTP started in 2008 to introduce high school students to building codes and the field of building safety. Since its inception, the program has been implemented in more than 20 states, with over 60 participating schools providing certificates to more than 1,500 students.

Over the past year, the Code Council updated the HSTTP website, adding new resources and electronic forms to improve the experience for students and instructors. The Code Council has also showcased participating high school groups at its Annual Conference for the last two years. The Technical Training Program continues to expand throughout the country among high schools, colleges, adult programs and military support organizations.

  • At the end of 2019, the city of Miami implemented the program, offering after school classes led by its building department staff to local high school students.
  • The city of Perris, Calif., also successfully launched an evening course for students within the Perris Union High School District, the first in the state.
  • The Code Administrators Association of Kentucky will sponsor a booth at the Kentucky School Boards Association’s (KSBA) Annual Conference in Louisville, Ky., to continue to spread awareness of the program.

“Our goal in participating in the KSBA conference is to educate and inform the public education leaders about the Code Council’s High School Technical Training Program so that our vision to establish the program in Kentucky can be realized,” said Elizabeth Arrington, residential building inspection supervisor with Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.

In the coming months, the Code Council plans to develop an International Residential Code curriculum to assist instructors in implementing the program. It will launch an online portal for both students and instructors, housing program resources and exams and will continue to expand the national awareness and recognition of the program by an ongoing partnership with Code Council members and organizations.

The Code Council is currently seeking proposals to help grow the program to a national scale and expand the resources offered to students and instructors. Proposals are due by Feb. 28, 2019. To learn more about submitting a proposal, click here.
