Organizers of the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo™ (PSP Expo) are now accepting entries into the Million Dollar Pool Design Challenge. The competition is designed to give pool and landscape designers, builders and outdoor living architects a real-world scenario from which to deliver innovative design solutions without the restraints of a budget.

The PSP Expo team has been working with esteemed pool designers, Reid Schindler & Mike Farley, to set the parameters around the competition, which is also set to engage seasoned veterans and showcase experience and practice while also engaging students and recognizing their fresh ideas through outreach programs to landscape design programs at universities.

The challenge consists of one fictional couple, a husband and wife, who are seeking a designer to create the ultimate oasis in their backyard, which is an actual selected site. Their conflicting priorities mimic what the pool industry often experiences when working with clients in real-world situations. Full profiles of the couple and their design needs can be found at www.themilliondollarpoolchallenge.com

“This is truly a design challenge, where things like budget, circulation and equipment are less of a concern. We want to see the ultimate design of a pool, spa and outdoor living area from our industry,” commented Tracy Garcia, CEM, show director of the PSP Expo.

Organizers have identified four core learning objectives from the overall challenge:

  1. Learn how top pool designers deal with complex projects to give the homeowner everything they could dream of and more.
  2. Identify how top pool designers are presenting their work to the client, i.e., hand graphics, computer graphics, videos.
  3. Learn how top designers balance function with features.

More detail and the submission form for entries can be found at www.themilliondollarpoolchallenge.com.

Of the submissions, five finalists will be selected to present their ideas during a core conference session held at the International Pool | Spa | Patio Expo in Las Vegas. The session will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2018, as part of the show’s conference program. All finalists will receive two nights’ hotel accommodations, selected by show management, and have a portion of their airfare reimbursed. At least one student will be selected as a finalist.

The winner will receive an additional prize, to be determined, and be featured in leading industry publications. The winner will be selected during Wednesday’s session.

The PSP Expo core conference program also includes an entire track for designers and builders including sessions presented by the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) and GENESIS®.

Qualified media receive complimentary access to the exposition, conference program, and the Welcome Party.
