As part of its ongoing commitment to advancing skilled labor, the International Code Council participated in the United Association’s (UA) annual Instructor Training Program (ITP) in Ann Arbor, MI. Plumbing, mechanical and fuel gas (PMG) Directors Gary Gauthier and Rich Anderson represented the Code Council at this premier training event.

The UA represents approximately 389,000 professionals across the construction industry, including plumbers, pipefitters, sprinkler fitters, HVACR service technicians and more. Their ITP event plays a critical role in shaping the future of technical training and workforce development.

During the event, a new agreement was presented between the Code Council and UA, enhancing access to Code Council resources for UA instructors through the Joint Apprentice Training Center (JATC) programs. The agreement outlines a shared commitment to supporting the UA’s training efforts through a structured outreach and education program.

Collaborating to Support the PMG and Construction Industry

The Code Council recognizes the importance of hands-on training in PMG systems. Through the JATC and annual ITP events, the UA continues to deliver essential instruction, which now includes Code Council training on the International Plumbing Code® and International Fuel Gas Code®.

Additionally, the program will focus on:

  • Commitment to Outreach: The Code Council will visit at least 12 UA Locals, ensuring consistent engagement and support.
  • Promotion of Code Council Resources: Each visit will highlight the use of available Code Council resources.
  • PMG Training Availability: The Code Council will offer tailored training sessions focused on PMG topics specific to the needs of each UA Local.
  • Code-Specific Guidance: Local requests to focus on particular chapters of the PMG codes will be accommodated to provide relevant technical guidance.
  • Engagement and Collaboration: Visits will emphasize open dialogue, ensuring discussions are practical and aligned with the locals’ current challenges and priorities.
  • Sustainable Impact: The objective is to deliver training and support that provides long-term value, reinforcing the Code Council’s role as a resource partner.

The Code Council is proud to collaborate with the UA and values opportunities like the ITP to strengthen industry connections and contribute to one of the nation’s leading skilled trades training programs.
