The Code Council Announces the 2024 Building Safety Leadership Experience Participants

The International Code Council has announced its 2024 Building Safety Leadership Experience (BSLE) participants. This year’s participants come from diverse backgrounds and credentials within the building safety industry. They all share a common goal: to enhance their expertise and connect with industry professionals, perfectly aligning with the objectives of the BSLE program.
This program offers a unique opportunity for participants to engage in a series of events during the Code Council’s Annual Conference. Participants will gain insights into the Code Council’s governance, Chapter program, Membership Councils and code development hearings.
The 2024 BSLE participants will attend the Code Council’s Annual Conference in Long Beach, California, from October 20-24. They will have the chance to network, participate in educational sessions and stay updated on the latest news and trends in the building safety industry.
The Code Council extends its congratulations to all the 2024 BSLE participants and, in this article, highlights the career aspirations that inspire each of them.
2024 Building Safety Leadership Experience Participants
John Abner, Deputy Building Official, City of Mount Dora, FL
John aims to lead his expanding department effectively, focusing on training new staff, lowering the ISO score and achieving full accreditation as the city develops.
Dustin Baird, CEO, Nagi Services, Littleton, CO
Dustin plans to create a nonprofit Native American Building Officials Association to support individuals seeking to become code officials and provide certified inspectors for tribal lands.
Patti Daul, Division Chief/Fire Marshal, Pechanga Fire Department, Temecula, CA
Patti is dedicated to continuing to serve the Pechanga Indian Reservation by promoting modern building and fire codes to enhance safety, sustainability, equity and resilience.
David Dent, Building Official, City of Garden Grove, CA
David aims to foster a culture of safety and excellence in the building industry. He seeks to enhance leadership skills, gain in-depth knowledge of building safety, implement effective safety protocols, collaborate with industry leaders and commit to continuous improvement to create safer work environments.
Heaven Doherty, Permit Technician/Assistant Building Official, City of Pendleton, OR
Heaven aspires to become a Building Official for about 10-15 years and then retire to start a third-party inspection and plan review company.
Arlet Gonzalez-Martinez, Customer Solutions Coordinator, City of Austin Development Services Department, Austin, TX
Arlet’s short-term goals include furthering her training to develop industry expertise. She aims to build a strong foundation of skills and experiences for long-term career development, particularly in her role as a liaison and advisor in permitting concerns.
Amy Jones, Certification Specialist, Ohio Board of Building Standards, Lewis Center, OH
Amy is focused on educating the younger generation about the Code Council and Ohio’s code official profession. She aims to understand the role of the Code Council better and network throughout the U.S. to support Ohio’s code officials.
Marty Moseley, Director of Code Enforcement, Town of Ithaca, NY
Marty seeks to become more involved with Code Council committees and leadership positions. He believes in representing members and giving back through his work and volunteer efforts.
James Nixon, Bureau Chief of Property Maintenance & Housing Inspections, City of Lancaster, PA
James aims to impact the lives of residents by ensuring they have safe and quality housing.
Pak Keung Yip, Chief Building Code Consultant, North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshall, Wake Forest, NC
Pak Keung is dedicated to ensuring up-to-date and effectively enforced building codes. He aims to provide guidance on code compliance, advocate for advancements in building technologies and promote sustainability for resilient communities.
