Code Council and SRCC Unite to Assure Safety, Effectiveness and Fast Access to Markets for Solar Industry

October 2nd, 2014
by International Code Council
  • Press Releases

The International Code Council (ICC) and the Solar Rating & Certification Corporation (SRCC) have agreed in principle to join forces and combine resources to support the solar industry and communities, and meet growing market demands. The agreement was announced during ICC’s 2014 Annual Conference, Group C Public Comment Hearings and Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Pending a brief period of due diligence, the SRCC will become a part of the Code Council Group. ICC will continue to maintain the strong brand SRCC has built over the past 30 years. SRCC programs will operate with the highly skilled staff the industry has known for years and receive a surge of support from the ICC organizational structure.

“This merger is beneficial to both the ICC and SRCC in that it strengthens the programs and services of both organizations,” said ICC Board of Directors Immediate Past President Stephen D. Jones, CBO. “The work of the SRCC complements the work of ICC in its standards, research, publications and product certification. We now combine our resources to ensure the solar industry and regulatory communities are able to respond to the high demand for alternative energy systems.”

In 1980, the SRCC was incorporated as a non-profit organization whose primary purpose was the development and implementation of national rating standards and certification programs for solar energy equipment. Recognized throughout the nation, SRCC programs assure their participants that the products they design, manufacture and bring to market comply in jurisdictions throughout the United States. SRCC ratings are recognized as unbiased, fair and responsible measures that allow for reasonable comparisons and energy estimations relied upon by program managers.

“As a non-profit with limited resources, the SRCC is constantly finding ways of working harder and working smarter to keep costs low and quality of service high,” said SRCC Board Chair Ole Pilgaard. “Coming together with the International Code Council assures our stakeholders of the continued success of the SRCC programs the solar heating and cooling industry has relied on for decades. I am very proud of the contributions from my fellow Board Directors, Eileen Prado’s leadership, Jim Huggins’ technical expertise, and the commitment of our entire staff. I look forward to the future of the SRCC as it joins the ICC family.”

“In April 2013, ICC and the SRCC entered into an agreement to jointly develop ICC/SRCC Solar Thermal System & Collector Standards,” added ICC CEO Dominic Sims, CBO. “Both parties believe it would be mutually beneficial to expand this relationship in order to build a stronger future for both organizations. SRCC’s expertise and ICC’s resources are the right formula for the creation of services that the industry fine invaluable in getting their products to market quickly, with the widest possible acceptance in field”

The International Code Council is a member-focused association. It is dedicated to developing model codes and standards used in the design, build and compliance process to construct safe, sustainable, affordable and resilient structures. Most U.S. communities and many global markets choose the International Codes.

The SRCC is a non-profit, independent third-party certification entity that is wholly funded through fees paid by participants and users. It is unique in that it is the only national certification program established solely for solar thermal products. It is also the only national certification organization whose programs are the direct result of the combined efforts of state organizations and an industry association involved in the administration of standards.
