World Standards Week Celebration Focuses on SDO Cooperation, Collaboration

International Code Council a Member of the U.S. Planning Committee, Sponsor of World Standards Week Activities

The International Code Council (ICC), a longtime member of the U.S. World Standards Day Planning Committee, is once again supporting a series of events in Washington, D.C., commemorating the work of the U.S. Standards System.

The week of Oct. 24-28 will combine the annual conference of the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) World Standards Week (WSW) with other activities. As a Diamond Sponsor of ANSI’s Awards Banquet, ICC will participate in multiple WSW opportunities where members of the standards and conformity assessment community come together in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration.

On Oct. 27, the U.S. standards community will celebrate World Standards Day (WSD) with the theme, “Standards Build Trust.” This annual celebration started in 1970 and is recognized around the globe. In the United States, the event is co-chaired by ANSI and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This year’s Administrating Organization is ASTM International.

World Standards Day recognizes the importance of codes and standards in our global community and will include the presentation of the 2016 Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award, named after the late U.S. Secretary of Commerce. This award recognizes exemplary commitment to the development and implementation of codes and standards and is awarded to an individual for their professional dedication to standardization and conformity assessment. Past ICC Board of Directors President Ron Lynn was the recipient of the prestigious award in 2012. This year’s Award will be presented to Jim Thomas, President of ASTM International.

“ICC’s continued support and involvement reflects the Code Council’s strong belief in the importance of the American codes and standards system,” said ICC Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “The Code Council is proud to be an ANSI-accredited Standards Developing Organization, and over the past several years, ICC has served as Administrating Organization of World Standards Day twice.”

ANSI is a private non-profit organization whose mission is to enhance U.S. global competitiveness and the American quality of life by promoting, facilitating and safeguarding the integrity of voluntary standardization and conformity. Its membership is made up of businesses, professional societies and trade associations, standards developers, government agencies, and consumer and labor organizations.

Founded in 1901, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is now part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST is one of the nation’s oldest physical science laboratories. Congress established the agency to remove a major challenge to U.S. industrial competitiveness at the time—a second-rate measurement infrastructure that lagged behind the capabilities of the United Kingdom, Germany, and other economic rivals. NIST assists the federal agencies in their participation in the development and implementation of standards and conformity assessment activities and programs.

ICC has worked hand-in-hand with both the private and public sectors to support standardization and conformity assessment and is a member of the SES — The Society for Standards Professionals copyright alliance. Currently, there are more than 1,300 standards referenced in the International Codes, the construction and public safety codes that have provided U.S. citizens the highest level of building and fire safety regulations in the world for more than 80 years.
